Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

TomTom Star 40 / Star 40 Euro — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (VF3S)

This is a 3.7V, 700mAh Li-ion cell that fits the TomTom Star 40 and Star 40 Euro portable GPS navigators. It replaces OEM part numbers VF3S and AHA11108003. Swap it in when the original cell no longer holds enough charge to complete a navigation session.

  • Star 40 and Star 40 Euro fit: Both variants use the same 3.7V cell with identical connector pinout and physical footprint (36.70 × 36.50 × 5.80mm). The BMS on each unit accepts the same charge termination voltage, so one cell covers both.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the Star 40 platform and confirmed the BMS reached full charge termination without fault. Discharge cutoff triggered cleanly at the low-voltage threshold before the unit hard-reset.
  • First-fix cold start after fitting: After fitting this cell, power the unit on outdoors before driving. A full power interruption clears the GPS receiver's ephemeris data and forces a cold start — first satellite acquisition takes 5–10 minutes outdoors. Subsequent starts drop back under a minute once the almanac rebuilds.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the Star 40

The Star 40's GPS receiver draws the most current of any subsystem in the unit. When cell voltage drops toward the lower threshold, the device scales back receiver sensitivity to stretch remaining charge. You'll notice position jumps, sluggish rerouting, or the blue dot lagging behind your actual position. Plug in via USB or swap the cell before voltage drops below 3.5V to keep the receiver running at full sensitivity.

Star 40 shuts off without warning before the low-battery indicator appears

After fitting a new cell, the fuel gauge on the Star 40 may not reflect the actual charge state until it completes a full calibration cycle. The unit's shutdown threshold can trigger before the on-screen battery icon shows critical. Run one full charge from flat to 100% without interruption — this lets the BMS re-learn the cell's capacity curve and realign the visual indicator with the actual cutoff voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TomTom Star 40 lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is there any way to get them back?

Removing the battery cuts power to the RAM where saved routes and favourites are stored on the Star 40. If those routes weren't backed up to TomTom HOME or MyDrive before the swap, they won't recover from the device itself. Going forward, sync your device to TomTom HOME before any battery work — it takes under two minutes and stores everything server-side.

Satellite lock on my Star 40 is taking 8 minutes after the battery replacement — was something damaged?

Nothing is damaged. Pulling the battery clears the ephemeris and almanac data the GPS receiver uses to find satellites quickly. The unit has to download fresh orbital data from scratch — that's a cold start, and 5–10 minutes outdoors is normal. Stay stationary outside with a clear sky view for that first fix, and every lock after that will return to under a minute.

My Star 40 is draining the new battery much faster when I'm actively navigating than when it's just sitting on the dash — why?

Active navigation runs the GPS receiver, backlit display, and map processor simultaneously. That combined draw is significantly higher than standby. Screen brightness is the biggest variable — dropping it from maximum to mid-level cuts display current noticeably without affecting map readability. Connect the Star 40 to the vehicle's USB or 12V adapter on longer trips so navigation draw comes from the car, not the cell.
