Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard VZ-D131 / VZ-D135 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (FNB-Z161)
This 7.4V 1800mAh Li-ion battery replaces the FNB-Z161 pack in the Vertex Standard VZ-D131 and VZ-D135 handheld transceivers. These are compact DMR portables used in security, facilities, and commercial field operations. Voltage and capacity match OEM spec exactly — no modifications needed.
- VZ-D131 and VZ-D135 compatibility: Both models run the same 7.4V power rail, share the FNB-Z161 connector footprint, and use the same BMS handshake protocol through the dock. One replacement pack covers both units in a mixed fleet.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a VZ-D131 and monitored the BMS through repeated PTT transmit events. The overcurrent protection tripped correctly at high draw and reset cleanly — no latched lockout under normal transmit patterns.
- First insertion into the charging dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Vertex Standard dock requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.
VZ-D131 cuts out mid-transmission on a new FNB-Z161 pack
A new Li-ion cell ships at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.7V per cell, not full charge. When the radio draws transmit current at storage voltage, the BMS can interpret the voltage sag as an undervoltage event and cut the output. The fix is straightforward: charge the pack fully before the first transmission-heavy shift. One full charge cycle brings the cells to 4.2V each, giving the BMS enough headroom to handle the transmit spike without tripping.
Bar indicator shows one fewer bar than expected after charging
The VZ-D131 uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a voltage band, not a percentage calculated by a chip. A new pack that hasn't completed a full charge cycle will sit just below the top threshold and show one bar fewer than a fully charged OEM pack. This is not a capacity defect. Run a full charge until the dock green LED holds steady, then check the indicator — it should read at the expected level once cells reach 8.4V across the pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
The VZ-D131 drops to low transmit power mid-shift even though the battery shows charged — what's happening?
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. Li-ion cells that have been shallow-cycled repeatedly lose their ability to hold voltage under the current draw of continuous transmissions, even if the bar indicator looks fine at rest. The radio's firmware steps down TX power when pack voltage dips below a set threshold during keying. Charge the pack fully, run two or three complete discharge-recharge cycles to condition the cells, and retest — if sag persists after conditioning, the cells have degraded past recovery and the pack needs replacing.
The dock fault LED won't clear after I insert the new FNB-Z161 — it just keeps blinking. What's the fix?
A fault LED that won't clear usually means the pack voltage is below the dock's acceptance threshold — typically under 6V across the pack. This happens when a new pack has been in storage long enough for the cells to self-discharge toward the BMS lockout floor. Remove the pack, let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, then reseat it with firm pressure on a clean contact strip. If the dock still won't accept it, try a compatible Vertex Standard wall charger that supports recovery charging below the dock's acceptance cutoff.
Why does the VZ-D131 cut out instantly when PTT is pressed hard, but works fine on light use?
This is a BMS overcurrent trip triggered by the transmit current spike. When PTT is pressed at full power, the radio pulls a sharp current surge — if the BMS is set conservatively or the cells are cold, that spike can cross the overcurrent threshold and shut the pack down immediately. Warm the radio to operating temperature before use in cold environments. If cutouts happen at normal temperatures, check that the contact strip is clean and making full contact — a resistive connection amplifies the apparent current draw and can trigger the same trip.
