This is a 3.6V, 600mAh Ni-MH battery for Radio Shack cordless phone handsets. It fits the 23196, 23197, 23396, and 23616 models, along with over 90 additional Radio Shack handset variants. Physical dimensions are 40 × 42 × 13.50mm — confirm fit against your original pack before ordering.

  • 23196 / 23396 series compatibility: These models share the same 3.6V three-cell NiMH pack format, connector pin-out, and physical footprint. One battery spec covers the full group — no adapter or wiring change needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through charge and discharge on a 23196 handset. The base station accepted charge on the first sit-down, and the BMS held voltage within the handset's operating window across repeated cycles.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH cordless phones: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before use. NiMH cells in cordless phone packs need a slow initial charge to reach rated 600mAh capacity — a quick top-up will leave the cells underformed for the first few cycles.

NiMH batteries lose voltage during storage. If a pack sits in a warehouse long enough, cell voltage can drop below the threshold the Radio Shack base station uses to detect a valid battery. The base interprets this as no handset present and won't initiate a charge cycle. To recover the pack, connect it briefly to a stand-alone NiMH charger at a low rate — even 30 minutes at a slow charge is enough to bring voltage above the base station's acceptance threshold, typically around 3.0V. After that, seat it in the base and the charge indicator should activate normally.

Range dropping off mid-call after a battery swap

DECT transmit circuitry draws a short high-current burst each time the handset communicates with the base. When a NiMH pack is underformed — common in the first three to five cycles — internal resistance is elevated and voltage sags under that RF load. The handset interprets the sag as low battery and reduces transmit power, which cuts effective range. Run three to five full charge-and-use cycles without interrupting the charge, and internal resistance drops as the cells condition. Range stabilises once the pack is delivering consistent voltage above 3.3V under load.

Talk time is much shorter than the original battery — is the new pack faulty?

Not likely. NiMH cordless phone cells need three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before they reach rated 600mAh capacity. Capacity on cycle one is often 60–70% of rated — this is normal cell chemistry, not a defect. Run each cycle to full depletion, then charge uninterrupted for 16 hours. By cycle five, talk time should be at or close to the rated figure.

The handset lost its pairing with the base after I installed the new battery — what happened?

Some DECT phones store pairing data in volatile memory that resets when power is fully removed. Swapping the battery cuts power completely, which wipes the pairing. Re-register the handset using the base station's page or register button — on most Radio Shack DECT models, hold the find-handset button on the base for five seconds, then press the registration button on the handset within 60 seconds.

The battery drains overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — what's drawing it down?

This is almost always a seating issue. If the handset isn't fully clicked into the charging cradle, the charge contacts don't make consistent connection and the handset runs on battery instead of topping up. Check that the handset clicks positively into the base and that the charge indicator light activates. If the light flickers or doesn't come on, clean the metal charge contacts on both the handset and the base with a dry cloth before reseating.
