Why the ACS800 won't complete its boot sequence on a new battery

The ACS800 runs a BMS handshake during every boot cycle. On a new cell, resting voltage can sit slightly below the threshold the firmware expects after a full charge — especially if the pack has been in storage. The device interprets this as a depleted or incompatible battery and halts the boot sequence. A single full charge-discharge cycle normalises the cell voltage curve and allows the BMS to complete its learn sequence on subsequent boots.

Charge indicator stalls below 100% on the first charge

On the first charge after a storage period, the ACS800's charge IC applies a conservative current limit while it profiles the new cells. This can cause the charge indicator to stall at 85–95% for an extended period before stepping up. The pack is still charging — the IC is running a conditioning profile, not a fault state. Let the charge cycle complete fully without disconnecting; the indicator will reach 100% once the IC confirms the cell voltage ceiling at 16.8V.

The BMS on the ACS800 uses a stored OEM chemistry baseline to evaluate charge state at startup. A new replacement cell has a slightly different voltage signature until it completes one full cycle, and the BMS flags this as below threshold. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle before clinical use and the alarm clears on the next boot.

The ACS800 won't power on at all after the battery sat unused for several weeks — is the battery dead?

Li-ion cells self-discharge in storage, and the ACS800 BMS will refuse to boot if pack voltage has dropped below its recovery threshold — typically around 12V for a 14.8V four-cell pack. Connect the charger and leave it for a full charge cycle before attempting to power on; the charge IC will recover the pack as long as individual cell voltage hasn't dropped below 2.5V per cell.

The ACS800 shuts off unexpectedly during a therapy session — the battery was fully charged before use.

New cells have higher internal resistance in the first 5–10 cycles, which causes a sharper voltage sag under the ACS800's compression pump load. The BMS reads the sag as a low-voltage cutoff event and shuts the device down even though the cell still holds charge. Complete 5–10 full charge-discharge cycles before relying on the battery for full-length clinical sessions, and the sag will reduce as the cells condition.
