If the original cell no longer holds charge or powers the phone through a normal day, this is the direct cell swap.

One full discharge down to automatic cutoff, followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%, resets the coulomb counter and re-anchors the gauge to the new cell's curve.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% charge remaining on the replacement cell

This is a voltage cliff failure, not a capacity problem. Under modem or screen load, the cell voltage drops sharply below the BMS cutoff threshold — even when the gauge still shows 20–30% remaining. It happens most often on cells that have been sitting in storage and arrive with a partially depleted state of charge. Charge the replacement cell fully before first use, then run one complete discharge cycle. If the shutdowns persist, check that the charging IC is delivering a full 4.2V terminal voltage at end of charge.
