Cobra CP200 / CP200S — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 4.8V, 1300mAh Ni-MH battery for the Cobra CP200 and CP200S cordless phone handsets. It slots into the handset battery compartment and restores power to the unit when the original pack no longer holds a charge. Capacity figures are taken directly from the product specification — 6.24Wh total energy.

• CP200 and CP200S compatibility: Both models share the same 4.8V four-cell NiMH battery bay, identical connector orientation, and the same charge acceptance circuit in the base station — one pack fits both.
• Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a CP200 handset. The base station accepted the battery without fault, the charge indicator lit correctly, and the BMS held voltage within the expected NiMH window across full discharge.
• First-charge conditioning on NiMH cordless packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use. NiMH cells in cordless phone packs reach rated capacity only after a slow initial charge — skipping this step leaves the cells underformed and talk time below spec for the first several cycles.

Base station charge indicator stays off after fitting a new NiMH pack

NiMH batteries lose voltage during storage. If the pack has been sitting in a warehouse, its resting voltage can drop below the threshold the CP200 base station needs to begin a charge cycle. The base reads the pack as absent or faulty and shows no charge light. Fix this by briefly charging the pack in a standalone NiMH charger to bring it above 4.0V, then seating it back in the CP200 base — the base will now recognise it and begin the trickle charge normally.

Range drops noticeably when the CP200 handset is away from the base

The CP200 transmit circuit draws a sharp burst of current each time the handset communicates with the base. When NiMH cells are not fully conditioned, internal resistance is higher than rated, and voltage sags under that RF load. The handset's transmit power falls with it, cutting effective range. Running three to five full charge-discharge cycles brings cell resistance down to spec and restores normal transmit voltage — typically 4.6–4.8V under load.
