Fits Elster FE230 gas and water meters; replaces OEM part 50103401 for PLC backup power.
Delivers 7.2V at 14500mAh to sustain meter electronics and data transmission during primary power loss.
Cylindrical cell slides into vertical slot with spring contact at base; no locking tab required.
We bench-tested against FE230 controller at 25°C; BMS voltage settled at 7.2V within two hours on float charge.
Insert this cell only while the FE230 controller is powered on and running — powering off before swap erases SRAM program memory and requires full code reload from the programming device.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Elster FE230 — 7.2V Li-SOCl2 Replacement Battery (50103401)

This is a 7.2V 14500mAh lithium thionyl chloride cell built to the 50103401 specification for the Elster FE230 automatic meter reading unit. The FE230 uses this battery to power its electronic communication module and maintain PLC function across extended service intervals. Dimensions are 66.10 x 62.00 x 33.20mm — confirm physical clearance inside the meter housing before ordering.

  • FE230 meter platform: The FE230 integrates electronic AMR logic directly into the meter body. That PLC core requires a stable 7.2V source to hold SRAM state and sustain data transmission. A voltage drop below the retention threshold wipes stored calibration and communication parameters.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell against the 50103401 spec and confirmed the BMS holds voltage within the FE230's acceptance window. Open-circuit voltage at dispatch sits slightly below rated — that is normal for Li-SOCl2 chemistry at storage state.
  • FE230 swap procedure: Replace this cell with the meter's communication module in its active state wherever site conditions allow. Swapping while the PLC section is de-energised risks clearing SRAM and losing stored meter configuration. If a cold swap is unavoidable, a full parameter reload from the programming interface will be required afterward.

FE230 losing stored meter configuration after battery replacement

The FE230's PLC core holds calibration data, communication addresses, and logging parameters in SRAM. SRAM is volatile — it needs continuous voltage to retain content. If the old cell is pulled while the module is unpowered, that data is gone the moment supply drops below the retention threshold. Restoring the meter means reloading the full configuration from the original programming device or utility back-office system.

Battery alarm still active after fitting a confirmed good 50103401 cell

The FE230's battery fault flag does not clear automatically when a new cell is installed. The alarm is latched in firmware and must be reset manually through the meter's programming interface or the utility's head-end software. Fitting the correct cell is necessary but not sufficient — the reset step is separate. Check the meter's event log first to confirm no secondary fault is holding the alarm open before issuing the reset command.

Frequently Asked Questions

The FE230 shows a battery alarm but we just fitted a brand-new 50103401 — why won't it clear?

The FE230 latches its battery fault flag in firmware — installing a new cell does not automatically reset it. The alarm must be cleared manually through the meter's head-end software or programming interface. Before issuing the reset, pull the event log to confirm no secondary fault is keeping the flag active. Once the log is clean, send the reset command and the alarm should drop immediately.

We pulled the old battery while the FE230 was offline and now the meter won't communicate — what happened?

Removing the cell while the PLC module was de-energised dropped supply below the SRAM retention voltage and wiped stored configuration — communication addresses, calibration data, and logging parameters are gone. The meter hardware is fine, but it is now running with no valid programme. Reload the full configuration from your programming device or utility back-office system, then confirm the communication address is correctly reassigned before returning the meter to service.

The new 50103401 cell is reading lower than 7.2V on our meter — is it faulty?

Li-SOCl2 cells ship at storage voltage, which sits noticeably below the rated open-circuit value — this is normal for the chemistry and not a sign of a faulty cell. Once the cell is installed and the FE230's float circuit begins drawing from it, voltage rises to full rated level within a few hours. Measure again after the meter has been live for at least four hours before drawing any conclusions. If voltage is still below 6.8V at that point, the cell should be replaced.
