Explay Fresh — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This is a 3.7V, 2000mAh (7.4Wh) Li-ion cell built to fit the Explay Fresh smartphone. It replaces the original battery when capacity has dropped or the cell no longer holds a charge through normal daily use. Dimensions are 70.25 × 60.00 × 5.05mm — verify these against your existing cell before fitting.

  • Explay Fresh fit: The Fresh uses a compact unibody-style chassis with a fixed battery bay. This cell matches the connector pinout and physical footprint of the factory unit, so no adapter or modification is needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran charge and discharge cycles on this cell and confirmed the BMS communicates correctly with the phone's charge IC. Charge termination triggered at the correct voltage and the protection circuit tripped as expected under overcurrent conditions.
  • Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: On first use after installation, disable fast charging and run one complete discharge-to-charge cycle. This gives the phone's fuel gauge IC time to map the new cell's discharge curve before high-current charging begins on an uncalibrated cell.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the Explay Fresh after a cell swap

This happens because the fuel gauge IC on the Fresh is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. When the new cell hits a voltage the IC hasn't mapped yet, the phone reads the drop as critical and shuts down — even though charge remains. The fix is one full discharge-to-charge cycle without interruption. After that cycle, the coulomb counter resets against the new cell's actual curve and the shutdowns stop.

OS reporting erratic or jumping battery percentage after replacement

Percentage jumps — such as dropping from 45% to 12% in seconds — point to the fuel gauge IC recalibrating against an unfamiliar cell. The IC uses stored data from the previous cell and the mismatch causes unstable readings. Let the phone discharge to auto-shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100% with the screen off. After one clean cycle, the percentage should stabilise.

My Explay Fresh powers on after fitting the new battery but shuts off randomly at around 25% — what's causing that?

The fuel gauge IC is still using the discharge curve from the old cell. When voltage drops past a point the IC hasn't mapped on the new cell, it triggers an emergency shutdown even though capacity remains. Run one full uninterrupted discharge cycle — let the phone drain to auto-shutdown, then charge to 100% without unplugging early. That resets the coulomb counter against the new cell and the random cutoffs stop.

The phone won't power on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months — is the cell dead?

Probably not dead, but the BMS has locked out due to deep discharge. Li-ion cells that drop below roughly 2.5V per cell trigger a protection cutoff to prevent damage, and the phone won't boot from that state. Connect the phone to a wall charger — not a PC port — and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button. The charge IC will trickle current into the cell until voltage climbs back above the BMS recovery threshold, at which point normal charging resumes.

Fast charging stopped working on the Explay Fresh after I put in the replacement battery — the phone only charges slowly now.

On the first cycle after a cell swap, the charge IC sometimes falls back to standard 5V charging because it hasn't yet confirmed the new BMS handshake. This is normal. Complete one full standard charge to 100%, then unplug and restart the phone. On the next charge session, the IC renegotiates the charging protocol and fast charge should resume at its normal rate.
