Why the S380 cuts out mid-transmission on a new B-81J pack

New lithium-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically around 3.6V — not full charge. On the S380, a PTT transmit event draws a sharp current spike to power the RF output stage. If the cell hasn't completed its first full charge cycle, that spike can pull the voltage below the BMS cutoff threshold momentarily, dropping the transmission. Charge the pack fully in the dock before first use in a live shift. Once the cell is at rated voltage, the transmit spike stays well within the BMS operating window.

The S380 reads battery level through voltage thresholds, not a fuel gauge chip. A new cell at storage voltage will sit in a lower threshold band and display one bar fewer than expected — this is not a fault with the pack. Run the battery through one full charge cycle in the dock. Once the cell reaches 4.2V at full charge, the indicator will step up to the correct bar level and remain stable under normal load.

Yes, and it's a voltage sag issue, not a faulty pack. Under sustained RF output, the cell voltage dips under load — if the pack hasn't been fully conditioned through a complete charge cycle, that sag is more pronounced. Run two full charge-discharge cycles before relying on the pack in a full shift. After conditioning, resting voltage at full charge should sit at 4.2V and sag under transmit load will stay within normal operating range.

The charger dock fault LED won't clear after inserting the new B-81J pack — what's wrong?

This usually means the pack arrived below the dock's acceptance voltage threshold. Some charger docks will not initiate charging if the cell voltage is too low on first insertion. Remove the pack, wait 30 seconds, and reinsert — some docks require a second contact cycle to attempt a trickle charge recovery. If the LED clears and charging begins, leave the pack on a full charge cycle before use. If the dock shows fault LED consistently, check that the gold contact strip is clean and making firm contact.

The S380 pack won't recover after sitting unused for several months — how do I fix it?

Extended storage lets lithium-ion cells self-discharge below the BMS recovery threshold, which can cause the BMS to lock out the pack entirely. Insert the pack into the dock and watch for any indicator activity in the first two minutes — even a brief blink means the dock is attempting a low-current recovery charge. Leave it connected for at least four hours without interruption. If the dock shows no response at all, check cell voltage across the contacts — a reading below 3.0V means the cell has discharged past safe recovery and the pack should be replaced.
