Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kaufel 002262 Series — 12V Ni-CD Replacement Battery (BGN5500-10EWP-A800EC)
This is a 12V, 4000mAh nickel-cadmium battery pack for Kaufel emergency lighting units. It fits models 002262, 002015, 002132, and 002255. The pack slots into the fitting and connects to the onboard charge controller that keeps the cell topped up from the mains supply.
- 002262, 002015, 002132, and 002255 compatibility: These four Kaufel units share the same 12V charging circuit, connector pinout, and physical bay dimensions — 163.30 x 65.50 x 60.50mm — so a single cell type covers all four without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a simulated mains-failure cycle. The BMS accepted the load without a fault trip, and voltage held steady across the full discharge arc required for emergency duration compliance.
- First test cycle after installation: Hold the test button for the full rated duration within 24 hours of fitting. This lets the charge controller register actual cell capacity before your next scheduled compliance test — skipping this step means the controller may flag a fault based on stale data from the old pack.
Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement
A freshly installed Ni-CD cell ships in a partial state of charge after months in storage. The Kaufel charge controller needs at least one full charge-then-discharge cycle before the cell reaches its rated 4000mAh capacity. If you run a compliance test before that conditioning cycle completes, the light will cut out early — not because the battery is faulty, but because the cell hasn't yet reached full electrochemical capacity. Charge the unit on mains for 24 hours, then run a full manual test to confirm the pack sustains load at or above 10.5V before your inspector arrives.
Charge indicator staying red after a confirmed good installation
Some Kaufel fittings latch a fault condition in firmware and won't clear it automatically when a new cell is fitted. The red LED persists because the controller logged an undervoltage event from the old depleted pack and hasn't reset its fault register. On most 002262-series units, disconnecting mains power for 30 seconds, then reconnecting, forces a controller reset and clears the latched fault. If the LED stays red after that, check that the cell resting voltage is above 11.0V — a cell below that threshold sits outside the float acceptance window and the controller will refuse to begin charging.

Frequently Asked Questions
The emergency light dims and cuts out after a few minutes during the test — is the new battery faulty?
It almost certainly isn't faulty. A Ni-CD cell in storage self-discharges and ships at partial capacity, so the first test cycle will be shorter than rated. We saw the same behaviour on the bench before the conditioning cycle completed. Charge the unit on mains for a full 24 hours, then run the test again — the cell should sustain load well past the point where it previously cut out. If it still fails after that second cycle, check terminal voltage at the moment of cutout; anything below 10.5V under load points to a cell fault rather than a conditioning issue.
The fitting's fault LED is still on after I installed the new battery and the wiring checks out — what's wrong?
Several Kaufel fittings latch a fault state in the charge controller after the old cell drops below a critical voltage, and the flag doesn't clear automatically on cell replacement. Disconnect the unit from mains for 30 seconds, then reconnect — this forces the controller to re-initialise and read the new cell's resting voltage. If the LED clears and then returns within a few minutes, the new cell's resting voltage is likely below 11.0V from extended storage; leave it on charge for 24 hours before testing again. A fault LED that never clears after a power cycle points to a controller issue in the fitting, not the battery.
The old battery case was visibly swollen inside the fitting — can that damage the charge controller?
Yes, it can. Ni-CD packs in continuous trickle-charge fittings can swell when the charge controller loses regulation over years of operation, and a swollen cell can vent electrolyte vapour onto the PCB contacts. Before fitting the new BGN5500-10EWP-A800EC pack, wipe the battery bay contacts with a dry cloth and check for corrosion or residue. Also measure the charge voltage at the battery terminals with a multimeter — on a healthy Kaufel unit it should read between 13.5V and 14.4V on float charge. A reading above 14.4V means the charge controller is overcharging and will damage the new cell over time.
