Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kaufel 002095 / 002265 Series — 24V Ni-CD Replacement Battery (BGN5500-20SWP-A800EC)

This is a 24V, 4000mAh nickel-cadmium battery pack built to replace the OEM cell in Kaufel emergency lighting units. It fits models 002095, 002072, 002233, and 002265. These fittings use this pack to power maintained and non-maintained emergency lighting during mains failure events.

  • Kaufel 002095 / 002072 / 002233 / 002265 compatibility: All four models run the same 24V charge rail and use an identical connector and cell format. The charge controller in each fitting expects a Ni-CD pack at this voltage — substituting a different chemistry here will trigger a permanent fault state on the charge board.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through a full charge cycle and simulated mains dropout. The BMS accepted float charge without fault, and the cell voltage held above the low-voltage cutoff threshold across the full discharge test period.
  • First test cycle after installation: Within 24 hours of fitting the new cell, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This lets the charge controller register actual cell capacity before the next scheduled compliance test — a new Ni-CD pack from storage may not reach full rated output on its very first activation without this conditioning cycle.

Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation

Kaufel fittings monitor incoming cell voltage at the start of the charge cycle. A pack that has been in storage can sit below the float acceptance window — typically under 22V for a 24V Ni-CD — and the controller reads this as a fault rather than a discharged cell. The charge board then holds the red LED and does not begin charging. Leave the fitting powered for up to 12 hours; most controllers will begin trickle-charging once the cell voltage creeps above the acceptance threshold, after which the indicator shifts to amber and then green. If the LED remains red past 12 hours, measure pack voltage directly — a healthy new cell should be reading at least 20V after that window.

Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement

A freshly installed Ni-CD pack has not yet completed a full charge-discharge cycle, so rated capacity is not available on the first activation. During a duration compliance test this shows as the light cutting out before the required period ends — not a faulty cell, but an unconditioned one. Run one full manual test cycle immediately after installation: charge for 24 hours, then hold the test button through the complete rated duration. Capacity typically reaches specification by the second or third cycle. Do not schedule a formal compliance test until at least one full conditioning cycle is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

The fitting's fault LED is still on after I've installed the new battery and confirmed the connections are solid — what's causing this?

Several Kaufel fittings latch a fault condition in firmware and do not clear it automatically when a new cell is installed. The LED needs a manual reset: switch the fitting off at the supply, wait 30 seconds, then restore power. If the fault LED clears and then returns within a few minutes, measure the pack voltage directly — it should be above 20V; anything below that means the cell has not yet entered the charge controller's acceptance window and needs more time on charge before the fault will clear permanently.

The light stays bright for the first couple of minutes during a test but then dims noticeably — is the cell faulty?

This is a conditioning issue, not a failed cell. A Ni-CD pack coming out of storage delivers near-full voltage at the start of discharge but drops off faster than a fully cycled cell because the electrolyte distribution across the plates is uneven. The dim-down during the test is the cell hitting an early voltage sag point. Run one full charge cycle — 24 hours on charge — then repeat the test. After one complete cycle the plates condition and the voltage curve flattens out, so the light holds consistent output across the full duration. Do not submit the fitting for a compliance duration test until that first full cycle is done.

I noticed the battery pack looks slightly swollen after I removed it — could the replacement cell do the same thing?

Swelling in a Ni-CD emergency lighting pack is almost always caused by years of continuous trickle charge at elevated temperature inside an enclosed fitting. The charge controller applies a low constant current 24 hours a day, and if the fitting runs warm — near heat sources or in a poorly ventilated ceiling void — the cell overheats slowly over time and gas builds up inside the casing. The replacement cell will behave the same way if those conditions continue. Check that the fitting is not mounted directly adjacent to heat-generating equipment and that the ventilation slots on the body are clear. If the ambient temperature at the fitting location regularly exceeds 30°C, inspect the cell annually rather than waiting for the standard replacement interval.
