Shipping calculated at checkout.
Fits Lenovo A5 and L18021 models, replaces OEM battery BL291.
Voltage rated 3.85V, 3900mAh capacity — standard output for this device class, no overvoltage risk on the charging circuit.
Connector type is proprietary Lenovo, orientation locked by contact alignment on the battery door latch.
We bench tested this cell on a discharged A5 unit; the BMS accepted charge current without fault codes and held 3.85V under 500mA load draw.
On first use after installation, disable fast charging for one complete discharge-charge cycle — this lets the fuel gauge IC recalibrate against the new cell discharge curve before high-current charging runs.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Lenovo A5 / L18021 — 3.85V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (BL291)

This 3.85V, 3900mAh Li-Polymer cell replaces the original BL291 battery in the Lenovo A5 (model L18021) smartphone. It fits the stock battery bay without modification and connects via the original ribbon connector. Capacity figures come directly from our sourced cell spec — 3900mAh at 15.02Wh.

  • A5 and L18021 compatibility: Both model numbers refer to the same physical handset sold across different regional markets. The battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol are identical — one cell fits both.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on an A5 unit. The BMS accepted the charge IC handshake without error flags, and the protection circuit tripped correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: On first use after installation, disable fast charging and run one complete discharge-charge cycle at standard current. This lets the fuel gauge IC map its coulomb counter against the new cell's actual discharge curve before higher charge rates are introduced.

Why the Lenovo A5 reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap

The A5 uses a fuel gauge IC that builds its battery model from accumulated charge and discharge data on the original cell. When a new cell goes in, the IC still holds the old cell's impedance and capacity curve in memory. This mismatch causes the reported percentage to drift from the actual state of charge — sometimes by 10–15 points. One full discharge down to automatic shutdown followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% forces the coulomb counter to reset and relearn against the new cell. After that cycle, percentage reporting stabilises.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell

This happens when the cell voltage drops below what the modem or display load demands, even though the reported percentage looks healthy. A fresh Li-Polymer cell has a steeper voltage cliff under high-current draw until it has been broken in through a few charge cycles. The phone's protection circuit interprets that voltage sag as a critically low cell and cuts power immediately. Run two to three full discharge-charge cycles — after that, the cell's internal resistance stabilises and the voltage cliff flattens. If shutdowns persist past cycle three, check that the battery connector ribbon is fully seated and making clean contact at all four pins.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lenovo A5 won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months — is it dead?

Most likely the cell discharged below the BMS lockout threshold, which sits around 2.5V per cell. At that voltage, the protection circuit opens and blocks all current flow — the phone appears completely dead. Connect the phone to a wall charger and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button; the charge IC on the A5 runs a trickle pre-charge routine that slowly brings the cell back above the lockout threshold. If the charging LED shows any sign of life within that window, continue charging to full before booting.

Fast charging stopped working on the Lenovo A5 after I put in the new battery — the phone only charges slowly now.

On the first cycle after a cell swap, the A5's charge controller may not immediately negotiate the fast charge protocol with the new BMS. This is a handshake timing issue, not a fault with the cell itself. Reboot the phone while it is connected to the charger — this reinitialises the charge IC negotiation sequence. If fast charging still does not engage, complete one full slow charge to 100%, then disconnect and reconnect the charger; the protocol handshake typically succeeds from the second cycle onward.

The battery percentage on my Lenovo A5 keeps jumping around erratically — it reads 45%, then drops to 28%, then climbs back up.

The fuel gauge IC on the A5 is still running its model against the old cell's discharge curve stored in memory. The erratic jumps happen because the coulomb counter cannot reconcile measured voltage with the expected state of charge for the previous cell. Discharge the phone until it shuts itself down automatically — do not force a shutdown — then charge it in one uninterrupted session to 100%. That sequence gives the fuel gauge IC a clean start-to-finish data set to recalibrate its model against the new 3900mAh cell, and percentage readout should stabilise after one to two cycles.
