Fits Lenovo K5 Play and L38021 models, replaces OEM battery BL289.
3.85V, 3000mAh lithium-polymer cell delivers stable voltage for processor and display loads.
Connector seats flat into the device slot with no locking tab required.
We ran a full discharge cycle on the bench; BMS accepted the cell without early cutoff.
On first charge after installation, disable fast charging for one complete discharge-charge cycle to let the fuel gauge IC recalibrate against the new cell discharge curve.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Lenovo K5 Play / L38021 — 3.85V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (BL289)

This is a 3.85V, 3000mAh (11.55Wh) Li-Polymer replacement battery for the Lenovo K5 Play (L38021). It carries part number BL289 and slots directly into the phone's battery bay. Use this when the original cell no longer holds charge or the phone shuts down unexpectedly under load.

  • K5 Play and L38021 compatibility: Both model designations refer to the same handset released across different regional markets. They share the same battery cavity dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — one BL289 cell covers both.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on a K5 Play unit. The BMS accepted the charge handshake without fault codes, and voltage held within spec across the full discharge curve from 4.35V down to the 3.0V cutoff.
  • Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: After fitting this cell, disable fast charging and run one complete discharge-charge cycle at standard rate. The K5 Play's fuel gauge IC was calibrated against the original cell's discharge curve — one full cycle lets it remap against the new cell before fast charging pushes higher current into an uncalibrated state.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the K5 Play after a cell swap

A fresh cell's voltage curve doesn't match the profile the fuel gauge IC learned from the aged original. When the phone estimates 25% remaining, the new cell's actual voltage may already be approaching the threshold where modem and display load pull it below 3.4V. The phone interprets that voltage sag as a fault and cuts power — not because the battery is failing, but because the IC is reading from the wrong map. One full discharge-charge cycle at standard charge rate forces the coulomb counter to resync to the new cell's actual curve, and the shutdowns stop.

K5 Play not powering on after the replacement battery sat in storage

Li-Polymer cells self-discharge in storage. If the BL289 cell dropped below 2.5V before installation, the BMS may have entered lockout mode to protect the cell from deep-discharge damage. The phone will show no response — no charging indicator, no boot screen. Connect the phone to a wall charger rated at 5V/1A or higher and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button; the charge IC needs to trickle current into the cell until it clears the BMS lockout threshold before the phone will respond. Once you see the charging indicator appear, the cell has recovered above the minimum threshold and normal charging will resume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Lenovo K5 Play showing the wrong battery percentage after fitting the new BL289 cell?

The fuel gauge IC in the K5 Play stores a discharge curve calibrated to the original cell. A new cell has a different internal resistance and voltage profile, so the IC misreads state-of-charge — often showing 100% dropping suddenly to 70%, or stalling at a fixed percentage. Run one complete discharge down to auto-shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100% at standard rate with fast charging disabled. After that single cycle, the coulomb counter remaps to the new cell and percentage readings stabilise.

Fast charging stopped working on my K5 Play after fitting this replacement battery — what's happening?

On the first charge cycle after a cell swap, the K5 Play's charge IC sometimes fails to negotiate the fast-charge handshake because it detects an unfamiliar BMS signature and defaults to standard 5V charging as a safety fallback. This is normal behaviour on the first cycle. Complete one full charge at standard rate, then unplug and plug back in — the IC renegotiates the protocol with a known cell state and fast charging resumes on the second cycle.

The K5 Play feels warm near the battery compartment while the BL289 is charging for the first time — is that a fault?

A new high-impedance Li-Polymer cell generates more heat during the initial charge cycles than a broken-in cell does. The charge IC pushes current into a cell with higher internal resistance, and that resistance converts some energy to heat until the cell's impedance settles after two or three cycles. Warm to the touch is within normal range. If the phone becomes hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold, disconnect the charger, let it cool to room temperature, and check that the connector is fully seated — a partial connection raises contact resistance and adds heat at the join.
