The 3010 Classic's fuel gauge IC stores a learned discharge curve from the original cell. When a new cell goes in, that stored curve no longer matches the actual voltage-to-capacity relationship of the replacement. The gauge reads a voltage but maps it to the wrong state-of-charge point. One complete discharge-charge cycle overwrites the old curve data and lets the IC track the new cell accurately.

This happens when the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old, degraded cell — it expects voltage to hold at 20–30% but the new cell's voltage drops sharply under modem or screen load before the gauge catches up. The phone's protection circuit sees the voltage cliff and cuts power instantly. Run one full supervised discharge to 0% shutdown, then charge to 100% — after that cycle the gauge aligns to the new cell and the shutdowns stop.
