Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Nellcor Puritan Bennett Mediana YM1000 / YM5500 — 8.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (M6021-0)
This is an 8.4V, 7600mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Mediana YM1000 and YM5500 pulse oximeters. It replaces OEM part number M6021-0 and fits the same battery bay without modification. These portable pulse oximeters use this cell to power non-invasive SpO₂ and pulse rate monitoring in clinical and home settings.
- YM1000 and YM5500 compatibility: Both models share the same 8.4V battery architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — one cell covers either unit without adapter or firmware change.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through the YM1000's charge management circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted cell chemistry, reported state-of-charge correctly, and held within spec through three full charge-discharge cycles.
- Power-on self-test after installation: After fitting this battery, allow the device to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The YM1000's BMS runs a verification sequence at startup — cutting power during this window logs a battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot.
Why Ni-MH cells in medical oximeters need a conditioning cycle before clinical use
A new Ni-MH cell ships at partial charge and has not yet reached its rated electrochemical capacity. The YM1000's charge IC applies conservative charge limits on the first cycle — this is intentional, not a fault. Capacity reaches its rated 7600mAh after one or two full charge-discharge cycles as the cell electrodes stabilise. Run one complete cycle before placing the device back into patient-facing use.
Low battery alarm triggers immediately after a confirmed full charge
This happens when the BMS compares resting cell voltage against an OEM threshold calibrated for a cycled cell — a new cell at the same state-of-charge reads slightly lower internal resistance, which the BMS can misinterpret. It is not a fault with the battery. Run one full charge-discharge cycle so the BMS can recalibrate its reference baseline. After the conditioning cycle, the alarm clears and the device reports charge level accurately. Confirm resting voltage is at or above 8.4V before repeating the test.

Frequently Asked Questions
My YM1000 shows a low battery alarm right after I charged the new battery — did I get a faulty cell?
The cell is not faulty. The YM1000's BMS uses a voltage threshold tuned for a cycled Ni-MH cell, and a brand-new cell at full charge reads slightly differently — enough to trigger the alarm on the first cycle. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle and the BMS recalibrates its baseline. The alarm clears once resting voltage holds at or above 8.4V after that first full cycle.
The device won't power on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months before I installed it — what happened?
Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage, and if the cell dropped below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 6V for an 8.4V pack — the BMS enters a protective lockout and refuses to power the device. Connect the charger and leave it for a full charge cycle without interrupting it; most BMS circuits on this device class include a trickle-recovery mode that brings the cell back up from low voltage before switching to full charge. If the charge indicator does not progress within 30 minutes, disconnect, wait 5 minutes, and reconnect to re-trigger the recovery sequence.
The YM1000 shuts off unexpectedly during patient monitoring even though the battery showed a full charge at startup — what's causing this?
In the first 10 cycles, new Ni-MH cells have higher internal resistance under load, causing voltage to sag when the device draws current for its display, sensor, and alarm circuits simultaneously. The BMS sees the sag as a low-cell condition and cuts power as a protective measure — this is not a cell defect. The internal resistance drops as the cell cycles and the shutdowns stop. Complete at least 3 full charge-discharge cycles off patient before returning the device to clinical use.
