Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Nokia E90 / E71 / E61i Series — 3.7V Li-ion 1700mAh Replacement Battery (BP-4L)
This is a 3.7V Li-ion replacement battery for the Nokia BP-4L cell used across the E90 Communicator, E71, E61i, and related business devices. Capacity is 1700mAh (6.29Wh), matching the original specification. It fits any device in this family that takes the BP-4L form factor.
- E90 / E71 / E61i platform fit: These models share the same BP-4L footprint, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol. Nokia standardised across this business series so one cell works across the lineup without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on an E90 Communicator and confirmed the BMS handshake completed correctly on first insertion. The charge IC accepted the cell without rejecting it as unknown, and voltage held steady under simultaneous Wi-Fi and display load.
- Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: After installing this cell, run one full discharge to auto-shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100% before normal use. The E90's coulomb counter was calibrated to your old degraded cell — skipping this step causes the percentage display to read inaccurately from day one.
Why the E90 Communicator reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap
The E90 uses a coulomb counter inside the phone to track charge state. That counter builds a model of the cell's discharge curve over many cycles. When you install a fresh 1700mAh cell, the counter is still using the curve from the worn-out original — so it miscalculates remaining charge. The phone may show 40% remaining and then drop to 10% within minutes. One full discharge-to-shutdown followed by a complete charge resets the reference curve the counter uses.
Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the BP-4L replacement
This happens when the phone's modem and display draw simultaneous current and the cell voltage sags below the BMS cutoff threshold — even though the fuel gauge still shows charge remaining. It is a voltage cliff, not a capacity problem. A freshly installed cell with an uncalibrated coulomb counter cannot predict the sag point accurately. After one full recalibration cycle, the BMS cutoff and the gauge reading align, and unexpected shutdowns stop. If they continue after two full cycles, check that resting voltage measures 3.7V or above with a multimeter before reinserting.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Nokia E90 shows 35% battery then shuts off without warning — is the new BP-4L faulty?
Almost certainly not faulty. This is a voltage cliff: when the modem and screen draw current together, the cell voltage briefly drops below the BMS cutoff even though the fuel gauge still shows charge. The coulomb counter is calibrated to your old degraded cell, so it cannot predict that sag point on the new one. Run one full discharge to auto-shutdown, then charge to 100% without interruption — the shutdowns stop once the counter has a fresh reference curve.
The E90 battery percentage is jumping around erratically after I fitted the replacement — 60% one minute, 45% the next.
The fuel gauge IC is recalibrating against the new cell's discharge curve, and until it has a full cycle of data, the percentage readings are estimates based on the old cell's behaviour. This is expected on the first charge cycle after a cell swap. Let the phone discharge fully to auto-shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that single cycle the gauge IC has enough data to track the new cell accurately and the jumping stops.
The Nokia E90 won't power on at all after the BP-4L sat in storage for a few months — the phone is completely dead.
The BMS locks the cell out when voltage drops below approximately 2.5V per cell during extended storage, as a protection against damage from deep discharge. Place the battery in the phone and connect the charger — do not press the power button. Leave it on charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to boot; the charge IC on the E90 runs a trickle pre-charge recovery cycle that brings the cell back above the BMS re-enable threshold. If the phone shows no charging indicator after 30 minutes, confirm the charger is delivering 5V at the connector with a meter.
