It replaces the original cell when capacity has dropped to the point where the phone no longer lasts through a normal day of calls, messaging, and app use. This is a voltage cliff, not a capacity fault. Under modem transmission load or screen-on bursts, the cell voltage drops sharply below the threshold the phone's protection circuit tolerates — even if the fuel gauge still shows charge remaining. It happens most often with a new cell because the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. One full discharge-to-shutdown cycle followed by an uninterrupted charge resets the coulomb counter and eliminates most cliff shutdowns. The charge IC needs to trickle current into the cell to lift voltage back above the BMS re-enable threshold before the phone will respond. Once the screen shows a charging indicator, a normal charge cycle will bring it back to full capacity.
