Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Phone Mate SL4 / SL5 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 600mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Phone Mate SL4 and SL5 cordless handsets. It slots directly into the handset battery compartment and restores talk and standby power. Voltage and cell count match the original pack.

  • SL4 and SL5 compatibility: Both models share the same handset platform, battery bay dimensions, and 3.6V three-cell Ni-MH configuration. One battery fits both. No wiring or connector differences between the two.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a Ni-MH test rig. The cell voltage held within spec across the full discharge curve, and the base station accepted the charge handshake without error flags on repeated cycles.
  • First-charge protocol for Ni-MH handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. Ni-MH cells in cordless phones ship in a partially discharged state — the slow first charge allows each cell to reach balanced capacity. Skipping this step is the most common cause of short talk time on a new pack.

Base station showing no charge light on a fresh Ni-MH pack

Ni-MH batteries lose voltage during storage. If the pack sits in a warehouse long enough, its resting voltage can drop below the threshold the base station uses to detect a valid battery. The base sees the low voltage and withholds charge rather than risk a fault condition. Place the handset in the base anyway and leave it — most Phone Mate bases will begin a trickle charge after several minutes once the cells respond. If the charge light still does not appear after 30 minutes, remove the handset, wait 10 seconds, and reseat it to trigger a fresh detection cycle.

Range drops noticeably mid-call after fitting new battery

The SL4 handset's RF transmit circuit draws a short current spike every time it sends a signal burst to the base. A Ni-MH pack that has not been fully conditioned has higher internal resistance, which causes voltage to sag under that RF load. The base station interprets the weaker signal as distance and reduces link quality. Run three full charge-discharge cycles — charge to completion, use the handset until it prompts low battery, then recharge fully — and internal resistance will drop to rated levels. After conditioning, transmit voltage should hold above 3.2V under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Phone Mate SL4 talk time is much shorter than expected even after a full charge — is the battery faulty?

It is not faulty. Ni-MH cordless phone batteries need three to five full charge-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity. The cells arrive partially discharged and unbalanced from storage, so the first cycle or two will feel noticeably short. Charge fully in the base for 16 hours, use the handset until the low-battery alert sounds, then recharge — repeat this three times and talk time will increase with each cycle.

The handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?

Removing the battery cuts all power to the handset, and some DECT cordless phones clear their pairing data when power is fully lost. This is a phone firmware behaviour, not a battery fault. Place the handset on the base, press and hold the handset's Page or Find button on the base unit for five seconds to force a re-registration, then follow the pairing steps in the SL4 manual — the process takes under two minutes.

The handset battery drains completely overnight even when it is sitting in the base — what is causing that?

This points to the handset not making proper contact with the base charging pins, not a battery defect. If the handset is slightly off-centre or the pins are oxidised, the base supplies no charge while the handset draws standby current all night. Remove the handset, inspect the metal charging contacts on both the handset and the base cradle, and clean them with a dry cloth or pencil eraser. Reseat the handset firmly — you should hear or feel it click into position — and confirm the charge indicator light comes on within 30 seconds.
