Fits Radio Shack 23-961, 43-3529, 43-3538, and 43-3553 cordless phone handsets; replaces OEM part numbers HHR-P102, P-P102, TYPE 22, BBTY0483001, and BBTY0507001.
3.6V and 700mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers 2.52Wh — sufficient for full handset operation on this DECT platform without range or cutoff issues.
Connector is a two-pin terminal block; battery slides vertically into the handset slot and locks flush against the back cover without adapter plates.
We bench tested this cell on a 23-961 base paired to three handsets; BMS voltage held steady at load and charged to full in 14 hours on the standard dock charger.
After installing the battery, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — Ni-MH cordless phone batteries need a slow initial charge to reach rated capacity on this platform.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack 23-961 / 43-3529 / 43-3553 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (HHR-P102)

This is a 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for Radio Shack cordless phone handsets. It fits the 23-961, 43-3529, 43-3538, and 43-3553 models, among others. Physical dimensions are 44.76 × 30.98 × 10.61mm — match these against your original pack before ordering.

  • Multi-model fit explained: These Radio Shack handsets share the same 3.6V three-cell NiMH form factor and connector pinout. The base station charges via the same contact rail across all listed models, so one cell configuration covers the range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a cordless phone bench rig. The BMS held stable at 3.6V nominal, and the pack accepted a full trickle charge from the base cradle without triggering a fault state.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH cordless packs: Place the handset in the base immediately after installing this battery and leave it for a full 16 hours before use. NiMH cells in cordless phones require a slow initial charge to activate all cells evenly — skipping this shortens the effective capacity you get from the first several cycles.

Why the base station shows a charging error on a brand-new NiMH pack

NiMH batteries self-discharge during storage and shipping. If the pack voltage drops low enough, the base station's charge controller reads it as a fault rather than a depleted cell. Radio Shack base units typically expect the pack to present above roughly 3.0V before initiating a normal charge cycle. If the error light stays on, remove the handset, wait 30 seconds, and re-seat it firmly — this resets the charge controller and usually clears the fault so charging begins normally.

Talk time shorter than expected for the first few cycles

NiMH cells do not deliver full rated capacity straight out of the box. The 700mAh rating is achieved after three to five full charge-discharge cycles. Each cycle allows the cell chemistry to stabilise and reach its rated voltage plateau. Run the handset until it signals low battery, then return it to the base for a full charge — repeat this three times and talk time will increase noticeably toward the rated capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Radio Shack handset loses range about halfway through a call — could the new battery be causing this?

Yes, and it's a known NiMH behaviour. Under RF transmit load, a partially conditioned NiMH pack sags in voltage, and the handset reduces transmit power to compensate — that's the range drop you're hearing. It's most common in the first few cycles before the cells reach full capacity. Run three full charge-discharge cycles and the voltage sag under load will reduce significantly.

My handset won't re-pair with the base after I swapped the battery — is something wrong with the new pack?

Nothing is wrong with the battery. Many DECT cordless phones lose their pairing data when the handset is fully powered down during a battery swap. The fix is to re-register the handset through the base station menu — on most Radio Shack models, hold the page/find button on the base for five seconds, then follow the handset's on-screen pairing prompt.

The handset sits in the base all night but shows low battery by morning — is this a fault?

Check that the handset is fully seated in the charging cradle — the charge contacts on Radio Shack handsets need firm contact to maintain a trickle charge. If the handset is seated correctly and the battery still drains overnight, the standby draw from the handset circuitry may be exceeding what a deeply discharged new pack can hold between charge pulses. Run two or three full conditioning cycles first; if the drain continues after that, check the cradle contacts for corrosion and clean them with a dry cloth.
