Fits Symbol LS4278 and LS4278-M handheld barcode scanners; replaces OEM part numbers BTRY-LS42RAAOE-01 and 82-67705-01.
3.6V 700mAh Ni-MH cell delivers 2.52Wh — sufficient for full-shift scanning in retail and warehouse pick-and-pack operations without mid-day swaps.
Barrel connector seats vertically into scanner grip; locking tab engages flush with battery door to prevent accidental ejection during rapid scans.
We bench-tested this pack in the LS4278 trigger circuit; the Ni-MH chemistry held voltage steady under repeated scan bursts and wireless polling without BMS cutoff.
After installing this cell, place the scanner in its cradle for a full charge cycle before using in pick-and-pack — the scan trigger current draw is heaviest at minimum voltage and a pre-charged pack prevents false shutdowns on first shift.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Symbol LS4278 / DS6878 Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BTRY-LS42RAAOE-01)

This is a 3.6V 700mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Symbol LS4278 and DS6878 series handheld barcode scanners. It replaces OEM part numbers BTRY-LS42RAAOE-01 and 82-67705-01. The pack fits the LS4278, LS4278-M, DS6878, and DS6878-SR, along with three additional variants in the same family.

  • LS4278 and DS6878 family fit: These models share the same battery bay geometry, contact pin layout, and BMS handshake protocol. The 3.6V rail is consistent across the cordless laser and imager variants in this family, so one pack covers the full range listed above.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack in an LS4278 cradle and confirmed the BMS accepted the charge cycle without error flags. The protection circuit responded correctly to both charge cutoff and over-discharge conditions during load testing.
  • First-shift preparation on pick-and-pack lines: After installing a new pack, seat the scanner in its cradle and complete a full charge cycle before use. The scan trigger draws its highest inrush current when the cell is near minimum charge — a fully conditioned pack prevents false BMS trips at the start of a shift when scan volume is highest.

Cradle showing charging error on a new pack

Ni-MH cells shipped in storage state can present a voltage low enough that some cradles interpret the pack as faulty rather than discharged. The cradle's charge controller reads the initial cell voltage and may throw an error before attempting recovery charging. Pull the scanner from the cradle, wipe the gold contact pads on both the battery and the cradle dock with a dry cloth, then reseat firmly. If the error clears, allow the full charge cycle to complete before pulling the scanner for use.

Scanner losing wireless connection during rapid scan bursts

The LS4278 runs its radio and laser decode engine from the same 3.6V cell simultaneously. During a fast scan burst, the combined inrush from the laser firing and the Bluetooth polling interval causes a momentary voltage sag on a degraded or partially charged cell. The BMS interprets this sag as an under-voltage event and briefly throttles output, dropping the wireless link mid-burst. Charge the pack fully — confirmed charge means resting voltage at 4.2V equivalent post-charge rest — before beginning a high-frequency scanning session.

Frequently Asked Questions

My LS4278 scanner stops reading barcodes after I installed the new battery — laser fires but no decode. What's wrong?

A freshly installed Ni-MH pack shipped in storage state may not have enough charge to sustain the laser decode circuit through a full scan trigger cycle. The laser fires on residual voltage, but the decode processor needs a stable rail to complete the read. Seat the scanner in its cradle and let it complete a full charge cycle before attempting scans. Once fully charged, the decode failures should stop immediately.

The scanner gets noticeably warm after a couple of hours on the floor — is that a battery problem?

In the LS4278 housing, heat builds from the combined continuous draw of the Bluetooth radio polling and repeated laser firing with no airflow around the cell. A degraded or undersized cell runs at higher internal resistance, which converts more energy to heat under that sustained load. This pack matches the OEM 700mAh Ni-MH spec, so if warmth is excessive, check that the housing vents are not obstructed and that the scanner is returning to the cradle between heavy pick runs. Reduce back-to-back scan bursts if surface temperature becomes uncomfortable to hold.

The new battery doesn't seem to last as long as the old one did when it was fresh — shift endurance is shorter than expected. What's happening?

Ni-MH cells require several charge-discharge cycles to reach full rated capacity — a new pack at cycle one typically delivers 10–15% less than its rated 700mAh. Wireless polling frequency and scan burst rate both draw on the same cell simultaneously, so a high-volume scan environment will drain faster than light intermittent use. Run three full cradle charge cycles before judging shift endurance. If capacity is still low after conditioning, check that the cradle contacts are clean and making solid connection — poor contact resistance causes incomplete charges that compound the problem.
