The battery is not at fault. The MK 11 holds contacts, calendar entries, and running application state in SRAM, which is powered continuously by the main battery. The moment the old cell is removed, that RAM loses power and its contents are erased. The fix is to perform a full sync to ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center on a host PC before removing the battery — this writes your data to non-volatile storage where it survives a power interruption.

The MK 11 screen comes on but goes off immediately after installing this battery — what's happening?

This is a low-voltage shutdown, not a hardware fault. The device monitors cell voltage and cuts the display when it drops below a safe operating threshold — a new battery shipped in a depleted state can trigger this immediately on power-up. Connect the MK 11 to its charger and leave it for 30 minutes before pressing the power button again. Once the cell reaches approximately 3.6V, the device will stay on through a full boot cycle.

Battery life on the MK 11 is noticeably shorter when we use barcode scanning compared to normal use — is this cell underrated?

The cell is rated correctly at 850mAh, but barcode scanner LEDs and wireless radios draw several times more current than the display or CPU alone. That combined load accelerates discharge and makes the battery appear smaller than rated when scanning is continuous. This is normal behaviour for the hardware, not a cell defect.
