Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell

The U73's fuel gauge IC stores a discharge curve calibrated to the old, degraded cell. When you install a new cell, the stored curve no longer matches actual cell voltage behaviour. Under modem transmission or screen load, the new cell's voltage drops sharply at a point the gauge still reads as 20–30%. The phone interprets this as an under-voltage condition and shuts down. One full discharge-charge cycle recalibrates the coulomb counter against the new cell, and the shutdowns stop.

Phone won't power on after the battery sat in storage

Li-ion cells self-discharge in storage. If voltage drops below approximately 2.5V per cell, the BMS enters lockout to prevent damage and blocks normal power-on. Plugging in a charger may show no response at all. Apply a known-good USB charger for 15–20 minutes without pressing the power button — this allows the BMS to see trickle current, exit lockout, and resume normal charging. Once the LED or screen shows a charge indicator, the cell is above the recovery threshold.
