Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Yaesu VX-820 / VX-821 / VX-824 / VX-829 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (FNB-V86LI)
This is a 7.4V, 2200mAh (16.28Wh) lithium-ion battery for the Yaesu VX-820, VX-821, VX-824, and VX-829 handheld transceivers. It replaces OEM part numbers FNB-V86LI and FNB-V87LI. The battery slots directly into the radio's battery bay and connects via the standard Vertex contact strip.
- VX-820 series platform fit: The VX-820, VX-821, VX-824, and VX-829 share the same battery bay dimensions, voltage rail, and contact pinout. A single pack covers all four models because the BMS handshake threshold and connector layout are identical across the series.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a VX-820 through repeated PTT transmit bursts. The BMS held the voltage rail stable under the transmit current spike and recovered cleanly between transmissions without triggering overcurrent cutoff.
- First insertion contact cycle: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Vertex platform requires a clean contact cycle to recognise the new BMS and begin charging.
Why the VX-820 cuts out mid-transmission on a freshly inserted battery
Replacement packs ship at storage voltage — typically around 3.7V per cell, or roughly 7.4V combined. That's at the lower edge of the VX-820's acceptable input range. When PTT is pressed, transmit draw spikes sharply and the BMS may trip overcurrent protection before the cells have been conditioned through a full charge cycle. This isn't a defective pack — it's the BMS doing its job at a low state of charge. Charge the battery fully before first field use; the cutout behaviour stops once the cells are at operating voltage.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new FNB-V86LI
The VX-820 uses a simple voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a voltage band, not a percentage from a fuel gauge chip. A new pack at storage voltage reads lower than a fully charged cell, so the radio displays one fewer bar than it will after a full charge. This is normal behaviour for any new lithium-ion pack. Charge the battery completely in the dock and confirm the indicator reads full before drawing conclusions about pack capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
My VX-820 drops to reduced TX power partway through a long transmission — is this the new battery?
Yes, this is voltage sag under sustained RF output. When the cells aren't yet conditioned, internal impedance is higher, and the voltage rail dips during a long PTT hold — the radio reduces transmit power to stay within its operating window. Run two full charge-discharge cycles before extended use. After conditioning, the voltage rail stays stable and the TX power drop stops.
The charger dock blinks a fault LED after I insert the FNB-V86LI replacement — it never starts charging.
The dock is rejecting the BMS handshake because the contact strip isn't making clean electrical contact. Remove the pack, wipe all gold contacts on both the battery and the dock with a dry cloth, and reseat the pack firmly until it clicks. If the fault LED persists, the pack may be below the dock's acceptance voltage threshold from extended storage — connect it to a compatible external Li-ion charger at 7.4V to bring the cells above 7.0V, then return it to the dock.
This battery has been sitting unused for several months and the VX-820 won't power on at all — is it dead?
Extended storage can push Li-ion cells below the BMS recovery threshold, causing the protection circuit to lock out entirely. Place the pack in a compatible charger that supports recovery or pre-charge mode — these apply a low current to bring the cell voltage back above the BMS unlock point, typically around 2.5V per cell. Once voltage crosses that threshold, the BMS re-initialises and normal charging resumes. Do not force-charge a locked-out pack at full current.
