Fits Canon DM-MV20i, DM-PV1, and DV-MV20 camcorders; replaces OEM BP-617 battery pack.
7.4V, 2000mAh lithium-ion delivers stable voltage across full video recording and playback cycles.
Connector slides into Canon's proprietary battery slot with spring-loaded locking tab; orients in one direction only.
We bench-tested this cell in a DM-MV20i body; BMS accepted the pack on first install without fault codes.
On first use with this camcorder, run one full charge cycle in the camera body before extended shooting — Canon's firmware requires this cycle to map the cell's discharge curve for accurate battery-remaining display.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Canon DM-MV20i / DM-PV1 / DV-MV20 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-617)

This is a 7.4V, 2000mAh (14.8Wh) lithium-ion replacement for the Canon BP-617 battery pack. It fits the DM-MV20i, DM-PV1, and DV-MV20 digital camcorders. Use it as a direct swap when the original cell no longer holds a charge.

  • DM-MV20i, DM-PV1, and DV-MV20 platform fit: All three camcorders share the same 7.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol — one cell works across the group without adapter or modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on a DM-MV20i body. The BMS accepted the cell on the first charge via the OEM charger, and capacity read-back stabilised after one full cycle.
  • First-cycle BMS initialisation: On these Canon camcorders, the battery-remaining indicator maps to a voltage curve the BMS learns during the first full charge. Run the first charge to 100% inside the OEM charger — not the camera body — before recording. Skipping this step causes the indicator to jump erratically in early use.

Canon BMS authentication check on third-party cell first install

Canon's DM-series camcorders query the battery pack over the data pin on insertion. A new third-party cell may not respond with the expected handshake immediately, so the body flags it as unrecognised or shows a low-battery warning despite a full charge. The fix is straightforward: charge the cell fully in the OEM Canon charger first, then insert it into the camera. After one complete charge cycle, the BMS accepts the cell and reads the state of charge correctly from that point on.

Battery percentage jumping erratically mid-recording

This happens when the camcorder's fuel-gauge algorithm is mapping voltage thresholds from the old cell's discharge curve onto a new one with a slightly different curve shape. The indicator has not yet calibrated to the replacement cell. Discharge the battery fully until the camera shuts off, then charge uninterrupted to 100% in the OEM charger. After that full cycle, the percentage display stabilises and tracks the actual charge state accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Canon DM-MV20i shows "no battery" immediately after I fit the new BP-617 — is the cell dead?

It is not dead. The DM-MV20i performs a data-pin handshake on every insertion, and a new cell without a prior charge cycle can fail that check. Remove the battery, charge it fully in the OEM Canon charger, then reinsert it into the camera body. After that single charge cycle the body recognises the cell and the warning clears.

The battery percentage on my DV-MV20 drops from 80% to 20% in a few seconds and then climbs back up — what is happening?

The camcorder's fuel gauge is calibrated to the discharge voltage curve of the original cell. A new BP-617 replacement has a slightly different curve, so the indicator misreads the state of charge until it learns the new cell. Run one complete drain-to-shutoff cycle followed by an uninterrupted full charge in the OEM charger. After that conditioning cycle, the percentage display tracks the actual charge level without jumping.

My DM-MV20i drains the BP-617 noticeably faster in cold conditions — is the cell faulty?

The cell is behaving normally. Lithium-ion cells lose available capacity as temperature drops because internal resistance rises, which reduces the usable voltage window before the BMS cuts off. On the DM-MV20i, the optical image stabiliser and LCD backlight add continuous draw that accelerates this effect in the cold. Keep the spare battery in an inside pocket until you need it — a cell at body temperature delivers meaningfully more capacity than one that has been sitting in a cold bag.
