Fits Garmin EDGE 1040 and inReach Messenger; replaces OEM part number 361-00135-01.
3.7V, 1800mAh Li-Polymer cell delivers the energy density required for extended cycling sessions on navigation and performance tracking.
Connector attaches vertically into the battery bay with a single friction-fit locking tab; no tools needed for removal or installation.
We bench-tested this cell in the EDGE 1040 platform; the BMS initialized without fault codes and held voltage stability across discharge cycles.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation — cold start after power interruption takes 5–10 minutes versus under one minute for warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin EDGE 1040 / inReach Messenger — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (361-00135-01)

This is a 3.7V, 1800mAh Li-Polymer replacement cell for the Garmin EDGE 1040 cycling GPS computer and the inReach Messenger. Both devices use OEM part number 361-00135-01. Fit the same physical cell — 48.00 × 42.60 × 6.20mm — with the same connector and BMS interface.

  • EDGE 1040 and inReach Messenger compatibility: Both devices share the 361-00135-01 cell because they run the same 3.7V power rail and use an identical connector pinout. The BMS handshake protocol is the same across both platforms, so the replacement cell communicates charge state to each device without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through full charge and discharge cycles on the EDGE 1040. The BMS reported accurate state-of-charge throughout, with no false low-battery triggers or premature cutoff events during GPS-active testing.
  • First satellite fix after fitting: After fitting this cell, power the EDGE 1040 fully on outdoors before your ride. A full power interruption clears the satellite almanac cache, so the device performs a cold start — expect 5–10 minutes for the first fix versus under a minute for subsequent warm starts once the almanac rebuilds.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the EDGE 1040

When battery voltage drops toward the lower end of the 3.7V nominal range, the EDGE 1040 reduces GPS receiver sensitivity to conserve power. This shows up as a wider track scatter on the recorded ride file — switchbacks look rounded and elevation graphs develop staircase artefacts. The receiver is still locking onto satellites, but with fewer signals processed. Keeping the cell above 3.5V under load maintains full receiver sensitivity and cleaner track data.

EDGE 1040 shuts off without warning at the start of a descent

This happens when the on-screen battery indicator reads 10–15% but the device cuts out immediately. An aged or deeply discharged cell develops higher internal resistance — under the momentary load spike of the GPS receiver processing rapid altitude and speed changes, terminal voltage drops below the BMS cutoff threshold faster than the indicator updates. The device shuts down before the visual warning fires. After fitting a fresh cell, do one full charge cycle to 4.2V so the fuel gauge recalibrates its cutoff curve to the new cell's actual capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

My EDGE 1040 lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes, and it happens because the EDGE 1040 holds some navigation data in volatile RAM that loses state on full power removal. Saved courses stored to the device's internal flash are safe, but any unsaved active route or recent track in progress gets wiped. Before pulling the old cell, sync the device to Garmin Connect to push all data to the cloud, then restore courses from there after the swap.

Satellite lock is taking 8 minutes after fitting this battery — was it faster before?

That delay is a cold start, not a fault with the replacement cell. Full power removal clears the satellite almanac the EDGE 1040 uses to predict which satellites to search for. Without that almanac, the receiver has to scan the full constellation from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes outdoors with a clear sky view. Once the almanac rebuilds and the device stores it, subsequent power-ons will lock in under a minute.

My EDGE 1040 drains noticeably faster when I'm actively navigating a route versus just recording a ride — what's pulling the extra power?

Active navigation keeps the display on continuously and runs the map renderer alongside the GPS receiver — that combination pulls significantly more current than background track logging with the screen off. The display backlight at maximum brightness is the single largest draw on the 1800mAh cell. Drop screen brightness to 30–40% during navigation and use the auto-backlight timeout to cut active display time — that reduces average current draw and extends usable ride duration without touching GPS sensitivity.
