Fits Kenwood UBZ-BH47FR, TCP-U90F, and UBZ-RJ27 handhelds; replaces OEM part number UPB-4L.
3.7V lithium-ion cell rated 1050mAh delivers stable voltage across voice transmit and receive cycles on this radio platform.
Connector seats into Kenwood radio battery slot with flat contact strip orientation; locking tab engages on insertion without force.
We bench-tested this cell on a UBZ-BH47FR dock; BMS accepted handshake on first insertion and held voltage steady under sustained PTT load.
If the charger dock shows fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth before reseating — Kenwood handsets require a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS profile.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood UBZ-BH47FR / TCP-U90F / UBZ-RJ27 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (UPB-4L)

This is a 3.7V, 1050mAh lithium-ion battery built to the UPB-4L specification. It fits the Kenwood UBZ-BH47FR, TCP-U90F, and UBZ-RJ27 handheld radios. These are compact short-range two-way radios used by event staff, security teams, and small business operations.

  • UBZ-BH47FR / TCP-U90F / UBZ-RJ27 platform fit: All three models share the same slim 3.7V single-cell architecture, battery bay dimensions, and contact pin layout. One UPB-4L battery serves the full group without modification or adapter.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and transmit cycles on the UBZ-BH47FR. The BMS handled PTT-triggered current spikes without tripping, and the dock accepted the pack's BMS handshake cleanly across repeated insertion cycles.
  • First-insertion contact cycle on Kenwood docks: If the charger shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth. Reseat the pack firmly. The Kenwood dock needs a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it begins charging.

Why the UBZ-BH47FR bar indicator reads low on a brand-new UPB-4L

New lithium-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically around 3.6–3.7V — not at full charge. The UBZ-BH47FR uses a simple voltage-threshold bar indicator, so a pack at storage voltage will show one or two bars instead of three. This is not a fault with the battery. Run the pack through a full charge cycle in the dock before drawing conclusions about its condition.

UBZ-BH47FR drops transmit power mid-shift on a replacement pack

Sustained RF output draws significantly more current than standby or receive modes. If the replacement cell has higher internal impedance than the original — common in cells that sat in storage — voltage sags under that load and the radio steps down TX power to protect the circuit. The fix is to condition the pack: charge it fully, run it through two or three normal use cycles, and impedance typically settles. If sag persists after three cycles, check cell voltage under PTT load — it should stay above 3.4V.

Frequently Asked Questions

The UBZ-BH47FR cuts out completely when I press PTT — is the new battery faulty?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead cell. The transmit current spike when PTT is pressed can exceed what the BMS allows if the cell voltage is below threshold — common on a new pack at storage voltage. Charge the battery fully before first use and try again. If the cutout continues after a full charge, check that the contact strip is clean and seated flush in the radio's bay.

My Kenwood dock has been blinking for two hours and never moves to solid green — what's wrong?

A dock that blinks continuously without settling to a full-charge indicator usually means the cell arrived below the dock's acceptance voltage floor. Some charger circuits won't begin a normal charge cycle if they read the pack as too low. Remove the battery, wait 60 seconds, and reseat it firmly to force a fresh handshake. If the dock still won't settle, charge the pack in a compatible external single-cell Li-ion charger at a low rate (0.2C) until it reads at least 3.75V, then return it to the Kenwood dock.

After a few weeks on the shelf, the UBZ-RJ27 won't power on even though the battery was fully charged when I stored it.

Lithium-ion cells self-discharge during storage — at 3.7V nominal, a few weeks unused can drop the pack below the radio's minimum startup voltage. The BMS may also enter a protection lockout if the cell fell too low. Place the battery in the dock for at least 30 minutes before trying to power the radio; most Kenwood docks can recover a cell down to around 3.0V. If the dock shows no activity at all, the cell has likely dropped below recovery threshold and the pack should be replaced.
