Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

KERN ECB / ECE / FKB-A Series — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This 9.6V, 1800mAh Ni-MH battery replaces the original rechargeable cell in KERN ECB, ECE, and FKB-A electronic scales. These portable laboratory and commercial weighing scales use this battery pack for cordless operation. Voltage and capacity match the original specification — no modification needed.

  • ECB, ECE, and FKB-A compatibility: All three KERN models share the same 9.6V Ni-MH battery rail, connector format, and charge-management circuit. The pack seats and connects identically across the range — the charge controller in each scale expects the same voltage profile and cell count.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the KERN charge cycle and monitored the charge controller's termination behaviour. The BMS accepted the full charge sequence and terminated correctly at peak voltage — no false cutoff, no overcharge flag.
  • Post-install warm-up on KERN scales: After fitting this battery and powering on, wait 30 seconds before placing any load on the pan. The load cell amplifier in these scales requires operating voltage to stabilise before it delivers accurate readings — skipping this step produces inconsistent results, not a fault with the battery.

Why KERN ECB scales show drifting readings in the first minutes after a battery swap

The ECB's load cell amplifier draws a stable reference voltage from the battery rail to set its zero baseline. Immediately after installing a fresh Ni-MH pack, the terminal voltage sits slightly above nominal as the cells settle. The amplifier reads that elevated voltage as part of its calibration window, which shifts the zero point fractionally. Allow the scale to sit powered on for 30 seconds, then press the tare button to re-zero before weighing — this resets the baseline at true operating voltage.

Scale showing an E error code directly after battery replacement

An E error on KERN ECB and ECE scales after a power cycle is almost always a zero-calibration fault, not a hardware failure. When the battery is removed, the scale loses its stored zero reference entirely. Reinserting a battery and powering on without an empty pan, or with residual weight on the platform, triggers the error. Clear it by removing all weight from the pan, powering off, powering back on, and holding the tare button until the display reads 0.00.

Frequently Asked Questions

My KERN ECB scale keeps showing an E error after I put the new battery in — how do I clear it?

The scale lost its zero reference when the battery was removed. It needs to re-zero on an empty pan before it will accept readings. Remove all weight from the platform, power the scale off, power it back on, then hold the tare button until the display settles at 0.00. That clears the error without any further reset procedure.

The scale is reading accurately for the first few weighings, then the numbers start drifting — is the battery faulty?

The load cell amplifier needs a stable voltage baseline before it locks in its zero reference. With a freshly fitted Ni-MH pack, the terminal voltage takes up to 30 seconds to settle at operating level. Power the scale on, leave the pan empty, wait 30 seconds, then press tare — readings stabilise immediately after that warm-up window. The battery is not at fault.

The new battery is draining noticeably faster than the original did when it was new — what causes that?

Ni-MH cells lose charge during storage, so a new pack may arrive partially discharged and show reduced capacity until it completes two or three full charge-discharge cycles. Run the scale until the low-battery indicator appears, then charge fully — repeat twice. If capacity is still lower than expected after three cycles, check whether the backlit display is set to stay on continuously; that draw is significantly higher than the basic display mode and shortens cordless time measurably.
