Fits Nikon 1 J4 and 1 S2 cameras; replaces OEM EN-EL22 battery.
7.2V, 850mAh capacity delivers full power to sensor, autofocus, and image processor on this compact mirrorless frame.
Connector slides straight into the camera battery slot with positive terminal facing outward; locking tab secures flush.
We bench-tested the BMS through five charge cycles in an EL-18 charger; no fault codes, steady voltage hold at 7.2V nominal.
On first use, charge fully in the camera body once before heavy shooting — the J4 firmware maps battery percentage from voltage curve and needs one cycle to display accurate remaining capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

NiKon 1 J4 / 1 S2 — 7.2V Li-ion Replacement Battery (EN-EL22)

This is a 7.2V, 850mAh Li-ion cell built to the EN-EL22 specification. It fits the NiKon 1 J4 and 1 S2 mirrorless cameras. The EN-EL22 powers the sensor, autofocus system, and image processor throughout shooting and video recording sessions.

  • 1 J4 and 1 S2 platform compatibility: Both cameras share the same battery bay geometry, contact layout, and BMS handshake protocol tied to the EN-EL22 cell. One replacement covers either body without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a 1 J4 body. The BMS accepted the cell, reported state of charge correctly, and cutoff triggered cleanly at the low-voltage threshold without forced shutdown errors.
  • First-cycle BMS initialisation: On first install, run one full charge cycle through the camera body or OEM charger before a heavy shoot. Some 1 J4 units need that initial cycle to map the cell's discharge curve for accurate battery-remaining display.

Why the 1 J4 battery percentage reads incorrectly with a new EN-EL22 cell

The 1 J4 maps its battery indicator against a stored discharge curve calibrated to the original cell. A new cell's discharge curve doesn't align precisely until the camera BMS has logged at least one full cycle. Until then, the indicator may jump from 80% to 20% without warning. Run one complete charge-to-discharge cycle through the camera body. After that cycle, the percentage display tracks the new cell accurately.

Flash not fully recycling between shots on a new battery

The built-in flash on the 1 J4 draws a short, high-current pulse to recharge its capacitor between shots. If the cell's voltage sags under that recharge load, the flash fires before it reaches full charge, producing weaker output or slower recycle times. This often appears near the end of a cell's charge, when internal resistance rises and the voltage rail dips under load. Check cell voltage before a flash-heavy session — below 7.0V under load, recharge before shooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

My NiKon 1 J4 shows "no battery" or refuses to recognise the new EN-EL22 replacement — what's happening?

The 1 J4 runs a BMS authentication check on first contact with a new cell. If the camera hasn't completed an initial charge handshake, it can reject the cell outright. Insert the battery and charge it fully through the camera body or an OEM-compatible charger, then power cycle the camera. That single charge cycle is usually enough for the BMS to accept the replacement and clear the error.

My shot count with the new EN-EL22 is noticeably lower than expected — is the cell defective?

Probably not. The 1 J4's rated shot count assumes minimal flash use, single-shot AF, and the EVF or LCD used sparingly. Continuous autofocus, active image stabilisation, 4K video, and frequent flash recycling each pull additional current beyond the baseline spec. None of those draws are reflected in the standard shot count figure. To extend cell life per charge, switch to single-area AF and limit flash to essential shots.

The NiKon 1 J4 runs noticeably warm under sustained video recording — is that a battery issue?

The heat comes from the combined draw of the sensor, image processor, and stabilisation system running continuously — not a fault with the cell itself. That sustained current draw does accelerate voltage sag toward the end of a video session, and the BMS will cut power cleanly when the cell hits its low-voltage floor. To stay ahead of an unexpected shutdown mid-clip, stop recording and check the indicator if the body feels hot; recharge before the cell drops below 7.0V under load.
