NiKon 1 J4 / 1 S2 — 7.2V Li-ion Replacement Battery (EN-EL22)

This is a 7.2V, 850mAh Li-ion cell built to the EN-EL22 specification. It fits the NiKon 1 J4 and 1 S2 mirrorless cameras. The EN-EL22 powers the sensor, autofocus system, and image processor throughout shooting and video recording sessions.

• 1 J4 and 1 S2 platform compatibility: Both cameras share the same battery bay geometry, contact layout, and BMS handshake protocol tied to the EN-EL22 cell. One replacement covers either body without modification.
• Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a 1 J4 body. The BMS accepted the cell, reported state of charge correctly, and cutoff triggered cleanly at the low-voltage threshold without forced shutdown errors.
• First-cycle BMS initialisation: On first install, run one full charge cycle through the camera body or OEM charger before a heavy shoot. Some 1 J4 units need that initial cycle to map the cell's discharge curve for accurate battery-remaining display.

Why the 1 J4 battery percentage reads incorrectly with a new EN-EL22 cell

The 1 J4 maps its battery indicator against a stored discharge curve calibrated to the original cell. A new cell's discharge curve doesn't align precisely until the camera BMS has logged at least one full cycle. Until then, the indicator may jump from 80% to 20% without warning. Run one complete charge-to-discharge cycle through the camera body. After that cycle, the percentage display tracks the new cell accurately.

Flash not fully recycling between shots on a new battery

The built-in flash on the 1 J4 draws a short, high-current pulse to recharge its capacitor between shots. If the cell's voltage sags under that recharge load, the flash fires before it reaches full charge, producing weaker output or slower recycle times. This often appears near the end of a cell's charge, when internal resistance rises and the voltage rail dips under load. Check cell voltage before a flash-heavy session — below 7.0V under load, recharge before shooting.
