Fits Radio Shack 23-9084 and 960-1849 cordless phone handsets, replaces OEM part 23-908.
2.4V, 600mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers stable voltage under transmit load on DECT handsets.
Connector slides onto the battery contacts inside the handset battery door; no locking tab.
We bench-tested this cell in a 23-9084 dock — BMS accepted charge without fault codes immediately.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require slow initial charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack 23-9084 / 960-1849 — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (23-908)

This is a 2.4V, 600mAh Ni-MH battery pack replacing OEM part 23-908 in Radio Shack cordless phones. It fits handset models 23-9084 and 960-1849. The cell dimensions (28.63 × 29.25 × 14.34mm) and connector match the original factory pack.

  • 23-9084 and 960-1849 platform fit: Both models share the same handset chassis, 2.4V charging rail, and battery bay dimensions — one pack covers both without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the base station charging circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted the NiMH charge profile without triggering a fault or error light on the base unit.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH cordless packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells in cordless phone packs arrive partially discharged from storage and need one slow, uninterrupted charge to reach rated capacity.

Base station showing no charge or flashing error light on a new NiMH pack

NiMH batteries self-discharge during storage and can arrive below the voltage threshold the base station uses to detect a valid pack. If the resting voltage drops low enough, the base treats the pack as absent or faulty and refuses to initiate a charge cycle. Remove the handset, wait 30 seconds, then reseat it firmly — a fresh contact reset often clears this. If the error persists, the pack voltage may need a brief external boost to 2.0V before the base will accept it.

Talk time shorter than expected after the first few uses

NiMH cordless phone batteries do not deliver full rated capacity straight out of the box — this is normal chemistry behaviour, not a defect. Cells require three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before reaching the 600mAh rating. Each cycle, talk time will increase noticeably. Run the handset down until it signals low battery, return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat — by cycle five, capacity should stabilise at or near rated output.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Radio Shack 23-9084 handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?

Removing the battery cuts power completely, and some DECT cordless phones drop their pairing data when power is lost. The handset needs to re-register with the base. Press and hold the registration or page button on the base unit for three to five seconds until the indicator flashes, then follow the handset's pairing sequence from the menu. No call to support needed — the base initiates the re-link.

The handset is fully draining overnight even when it's sitting in the base — what's causing that?

If the handset is not seated squarely in the base cradle, the charging contacts don't make a full connection and the handset runs on battery in standby instead of drawing from the base. Check that the handset clicks flush into the cradle and that the charge indicator light on the base activates. Clean the metal contact pads on both the handset and cradle with a dry cloth — oxidation on NiMH contact points is a common cause of intermittent charging failure.

The range on my 23-9084 dropped noticeably after fitting the new battery — is something wrong?

Range reduction after a battery swap points to voltage sag under RF transmit load. When a NiMH pack hasn't been through conditioning cycles yet, it can't sustain voltage under the current spike the radio transmitter draws — the handset backs off transmit power to compensate. This resolves as the pack conditions over three to five charge cycles. If range is still short after five cycles, check that the battery contacts in the handset bay are clean and making firm contact with the pack terminals.
