Fits Magellan eXplorist 500 GPS navigator, replaces Radio Shack part 55026650.
3.7V, 1050mAh lithium-ion cell delivers full capacity for standard field navigation modes.
Connector slides straight into the eXplorist 500 battery slot with positive terminal forward.
We bench-tested the BMS on initial charge — voltage ramped clean to 4.2V with no early cutoff or fault signals.
After installing this cell, power the unit fully on outdoors and allow five to ten minutes for first satellite acquisition — GPS performs a cold start after power loss that takes longer than warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack Magellan eXplorist 500 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (55026650)

This 3.7V, 1050mAh Li-ion cell replaces the internal battery in the Magellan eXplorist 500 handheld GPS navigator. It fits the 55026650 model used for hiking, geocaching, and field navigation. Swap it in when the original cell no longer holds a charge or the device shuts off unexpectedly in the field.

  • eXplorist 500 fitment: The 55026650 platform uses a single flat Li-ion cell at 3.7V to power both the GPS receiver and the backlit display. This cell matches the original footprint at 51.19 × 36.04 × 5.54mm and connects to the same two-contact terminal.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell under a combined GPS-receiver and display load. The BMS held charge through full discharge cycles without tripping early cutoff, and capacity measured within spec at 1050mAh.
  • Cold-start initialisation after fitting: After replacing this battery, take the eXplorist 500 outside to an open sky and power it on before navigating. The unit performs a full cold start after any complete power interruption — expect 5 to 10 minutes for the first satellite fix before the receiver returns to normal warm-start speed.

Why the eXplorist 500 shuts off without a low-battery warning

The eXplorist 500 reads battery state through a voltage threshold, not a fuel gauge IC. After a new cell is fitted, the device's internal voltage map is out of sync with the actual charge level. The indicator can show two bars and then cut off seconds later because the shutdown threshold is hit before the display catches up. Charge the new cell fully and complete two full discharge-recharge cycles to let the voltage curve recalibrate to the new cell's characteristics.

Saved routes and waypoints missing after battery swap

The eXplorist 500 stores user waypoints and routes in battery-backed RAM. When the cell is fully removed, that memory loses power and may not retain all saved data. Before swapping, export any critical routes using Magellan's PC sync software or note key waypoints manually. Once the new cell is fitted and the unit powers on, re-import or re-enter those routes — the GPS receiver and base map are stored in non-volatile flash and will be intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

My eXplorist 500 is taking forever to find satellites after I put in the new battery — is something wrong?

Nothing is wrong. Removing the battery clears the GPS receiver's almanac and ephemeris data, forcing a cold start from scratch. The unit needs an unobstructed view of open sky and around 5 to 10 minutes to pull down fresh satellite data on the first fix. Subsequent power cycles will lock in under a minute once that data is cached again.

The battery drains noticeably faster when I'm actively navigating versus just carrying the unit — why?

Active navigation runs the GPS receiver at full polling rate and keeps the backlit display on continuously — both drawing from the same 1050mAh cell simultaneously. In standby or with the display dimmed, the receiver duty-cycles and draw drops significantly. Reduce display brightness to the lowest usable level during long field sessions to extend time between charges.

My eXplorist 500 shows reduced GPS accuracy when the battery indicator is low — is that a hardware fault?

It is not a fault. Some GPS units, including the eXplorist 500, reduce receiver sensitivity at low voltage to protect the cell from dropping below safe discharge thresholds. Lower receiver sensitivity means weaker satellite signals get dropped from the fix calculation, which widens position error. Keep the cell above 3.6V during use — recharge before it reaches the low-battery indicator to maintain full positioning accuracy.
