Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Rand McNally TND-740 — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (MLP454094)
This 3.7V, 2200mAh lithium-polymer cell replaces the original MLP454094 battery in the Rand McNally TND-740 trucking GPS navigator. It restores battery-powered operation for in-cab route guidance and waypoint tracking when the unit is disconnected from the vehicle's power outlet. Dimensions are 82.00 × 45.00 × 4.90mm — verify your original cell before fitting.
- TND-740 platform fit: The TND-740 uses a slim LiPo pouch cell on a 3.7V single-cell rail. The MLP454094 footprint is specific to this unit — the connector orientation and cell thickness both matter. Confirm your original part number before ordering.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the TND-740 platform. The protection circuit handled cutoff at the low-voltage threshold correctly, and the charge controller accepted the cell without fault flags.
- Cold-start calibration after swap: After fitting, power the unit on outdoors and let it acquire a satellite fix before driving. A full cold start after complete power removal takes 5–10 minutes for first lock. Subsequent warm starts drop to under a minute once the almanac data rebuilds.
Why the TND-740 shuts off without warning at low battery
After a replacement, the fuel gauge IC loses its calibration data and no longer accurately tracks state of charge. The battery indicator can show one bar remaining while the cell is already near the 3.0V cutoff threshold. The protection circuit then trips and the unit powers off abruptly — no low-battery warning fires. Run two or three full charge cycles to let the gauge recalibrate against the new cell's actual capacity curve.
GPS accuracy drops noticeably during active turn-by-turn navigation
At low state of charge, some GPS receivers reduce RF front-end sensitivity to conserve power — the TND-740 exhibits this behaviour below roughly 3.3V under load. Fewer satellites are tracked, HDOP rises, and position jumps increase. The fix is straightforward: keep the unit on the vehicle charger during active navigation, or charge the battery to full before a trip where the cable won't be connected. A fully charged cell holds the receiver at full sensitivity throughout the session.

Frequently Asked Questions
My TND-740 lost all my custom routes and saved POIs after I swapped the battery — is that normal?
Yes, and it happens because the TND-740 holds certain volatile data in RAM that loses power the moment the old battery is disconnected. Custom routes and unsaved POIs stored in that RAM are gone once power drops to zero. Saved favourites written to internal flash survive the swap. Before pulling the old battery, export any critical routes through the device's backup menu if the unit still powers on at all.
The satellite lock took almost 10 minutes after I fitted the new battery — something wrong with the GPS?
Nothing is wrong. After a full power interruption, the TND-740 performs a cold start and has to download a fresh almanac and ephemeris from scratch — that process takes 5–10 minutes with a clear sky view. Warm starts, where the unit still holds recent satellite data, lock in under a minute. Take the unit outside with an unobstructed sky view and leave it stationary until the fix confirms, then it will warm-start quickly on every subsequent power cycle.
The TND-740 drains the new battery much faster when I'm actively navigating versus just sitting on the dash — why?
Active turn-by-turn navigation runs the GPS receiver, map renderer, and display simultaneously. Screen brightness is the biggest single draw — drop it to 50–60% and battery drain during navigation falls noticeably. The GPS receiver itself pulls a near-constant current regardless of route complexity, so the display is the variable you can actually control. If the drain is still excessive, check that the backlight timeout is not set to "always on" in the display settings.
