Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

SPOT X / SPOTXB — 3.8V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (704476B B10)

This 3.8V 3400mAh Li-Polymer cell replaces the original 704476B B10 battery in the SPOT X and SPOTXB satellite communicators. It powers the device's GPS receiver, two-way messaging radio, and emergency SOS transmitter. Capacity matches the original at 3400mAh (12.92Wh) — no compromise on the power budget these functions depend on.

  • SPOT X and SPOTXB compatibility: Both units share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. The 704476B B10 part number covers both variants — no hardware modification needed to fit either device.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the SPOT X's full operating sequence — GPS acquisition, satellite message send, and SOS standby mode. The BMS held cutoff voltage correctly and the device drew consistent current across all three states without triggering a protection event.
  • Cold-start reset after fitting: After installing this cell, take the device outdoors to an open sky and power it on before your next expedition. A full power interruption forces a GPS cold start — first satellite fix takes 5–10 minutes. Subsequent warm starts drop back under a minute once almanac data is rebuilt.

Why the SPOT X shuts off without warning at low battery

The SPOT X uses a fuel gauge IC that reads remaining capacity based on a stored charge curve. When that curve drifts — common after the original cell degrades — the on-screen percentage no longer matches actual cell voltage. The device hits the hardware cutoff at roughly 3.2V before the visual low-battery indicator fires. Fitting a fresh cell and running two full discharge cycles recalibrates the gauge so the warning appears when it should.

GPS accuracy dropping off during active tracking sessions

Some GPS units reduce receiver sensitivity as cell voltage falls toward the cutoff threshold — a power-saving measure built into the chipset. On the SPOT X, this shows up as position drift or wider error circles during long tracking sessions when the battery is below roughly 3.5V. The GPS and satellite modem are the two heaviest draws in the device, and they compete for current headroom on a degraded cell. A fresh 3400mAh cell restores the voltage headroom both subsystems need to run at full sensitivity simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

My SPOT X lost all my saved messages and contacts after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The SPOT X stores some user data in volatile memory that requires continuous power to retain. A full battery removal clears that memory, so contacts and message threads saved locally can be lost. Pair records and network credentials stored on the SPOT server are unaffected — log back into the SPOT app after the swap to re-sync your account data to the device.

It's been 15 minutes since I put the new battery in and the SPOT X still hasn't got a satellite fix — what's wrong?

Nothing is wrong. Removing the battery triggers a GPS cold start, which forces the receiver to rebuild its almanac and ephemeris data from scratch rather than using cached satellite positions. Open sky and a stationary position give the fastest result — stand clear of buildings and tree cover. First fix after a cold start typically completes within 10–15 minutes; every subsequent fix will be under a minute once the almanac is current.

The SPOT X battery indicator shows 50% but the device is dying mid-trip — why is the reading so wrong?

The fuel gauge calibration drifts when the original cell ages, and a new cell starts with an uncalibrated baseline. The percentage reading is an estimate derived from a stored charge curve, not a live voltage reading — so it can read high while actual cell voltage is already near cutoff. Run the new battery down to automatic shut-off once, then charge it fully to 4.2V without interruption. That single full cycle gives the gauge IC a reference point to work from and brings the percentage display back in line with real remaining capacity.
