Fits Reed S86 barcode scanner; replaces OEM battery for handheld scanning operations
7.4V at 2200mAh delivers sustained power for wireless scan transmission and trigger cycles
Connector seats vertically into scanner battery slot with positive contact alignment; locking tab secures pack
Bench testing showed stable BMS voltage hold across full discharge; no early cutoff observed
After installing, place scanner in cradle for one complete charge cycle before field use—scan trigger inrush current peaks when cells near minimum and can trip BMS protection on first shift otherwise.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Reed S86 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This 7.4V, 2200mAh Li-ion battery replaces the original pack in the Reed S86 handheld barcode scanner. It fits the S86 directly and restores full scanning and wireless function on retail, logistics, and inventory management floors. Voltage and capacity match the original specification — 7.4V, 2200mAh (16.28Wh).

  • Reed S86 fit: The S86 uses a 7.4V two-cell Li-ion pack with a BMS that monitors cell voltage and current draw during combined scan-trigger and wireless radio events. This replacement carries the same voltage rail and BMS-compatible communication, so the scanner firmware recognises the pack and reports charge state correctly.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through repeated scan-burst and radio-polling loads — the BMS held voltage steady across the combined inrush and did not trip under sustained multi-scan sequences typical of pick-and-pack workflows.
  • First-shift preparation: After installing, seat the scanner in its cradle and run a full charge cycle before the first shift. Scan-trigger inrush current peaks when the cell is near minimum, and a fully charged pack prevents false BMS trips during the first hours of use.

Cradle showing a charging error on a new pack

Charging docks on handheld scanners read pack state through contact pins on the battery base. Oxidation or debris on those contacts raises resistance enough that the cradle interprets the pack as faulty and throws a charging error rather than beginning a charge cycle. Wipe the gold contact pads on the battery and the corresponding pins in the cradle with a dry lint-free cloth, then reseat the scanner firmly. If the error clears, the pack was fine — the contacts just needed a clean path.

Scanner losing wireless connection during rapid scan bursts

During a fast scan sequence, the S86 draws current simultaneously from the imager and the wireless radio. This combined inrush can cause a momentary voltage sag on a partially discharged cell, which the scanner interprets as a low-battery event and drops the radio link to conserve power. The fix is to avoid running the pack below around 20% charge during high-frequency scanning — keep it topped up at shift breaks. If drop-outs persist on a freshly charged pack, check that the battery contacts are seated flush, as a poor connection amplifies sag under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Reed S86 not reading barcodes after I swapped in the new battery?

The imager needs a minimum voltage to fire correctly — if the replacement pack shipped partially discharged, the laser or LED illumination may not reach operating threshold. Seat the scanner in its cradle and charge fully before the first scan attempt. Once the pack is at full charge, the imager power rail should stabilise and reads will return to normal.

The scanner feels warm after a long shift on the new battery — is that normal?

Sustained scanning combined with constant wireless polling generates real heat inside a compact housing, and some warmth after a full shift is expected. If the casing feels hot rather than warm, or the scanner throttles scan speed, the BMS may be managing cell temperature under a heavy continuous load — allow a 10-minute rest and check that the ventilation slots on the housing are not blocked. Warmth alone is not a fault; throttling or automatic shutdown is the sign to act on.

The new battery seems to run out faster than the old one did at the start — why?

Fresh Li-ion cells often deliver below-rated capacity for the first two or three full charge-discharge cycles until the chemistry stabilises. Shallow cycles — short bursts of use followed by partial charges — slow this process down and can make early endurance look worse than it is. Run two or three full charge cycles, discharging to around 15–20% before recharging, and capacity should settle at the rated 2200mAh level.
