Fits V Tech 5838, 5865, 5884, 5890 cordless handsets; replaces OEM part 80-5074-00-00.
3.6V 300mAh Ni-MH cell restores full handset runtime on each charge cycle.
Connector slides into handset battery slot vertically; no locking tab, friction fit only.
We bench-tested this pack in a 5838 handset; BMS accepted charge immediately, voltage stable under standby draw.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require a slow first charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

V Tech 5838 / 5865 / 5884 / 5890 Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (80-5074-00-00)

This is a 3.6V, 300mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for V Tech cordless phone handsets. It replaces OEM part numbers 80-5074-00-00, 2422, and TL2615 across the 5838, 5865, 5884, 5890, and over 72 additional V Tech models. When the original pack no longer holds a charge, this is the direct cell-for-cell replacement.

  • 5838 / 5865 / 5884 / 5890 compatibility: These models share the same 3.6V three-cell NiMH pack, connector pinout, and base station charging circuit. One battery fits all of them without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on the 5838 handset platform. The base station's charge detection handshake accepted the battery immediately, and the BMS responded correctly to both trickle and fast-charge phases.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it undisturbed for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells at storage charge cannot reach rated capacity on a short charge — the slow first cycle is what unlocks the full 300mAh.

Talk time shorter than original battery after replacement

New NiMH cells ship at partial charge and need three to five full charge-discharge cycles before they hit rated capacity. On cycle one, you may see noticeably shorter talk time — that is normal, not a fault. Each subsequent full cycle reconditions the cells and recovers more of the 300mAh rating. Run the handset until it signals low battery, return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat until talk time stabilises.

Base station showing no charge or error light on new pack

V Tech base stations check the incoming battery voltage before committing to a charge cycle. A pack that has sat in storage can drop low enough that the base rejects it as a fault condition. Remove the battery, let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, then reinsert and reseat the handset firmly — the base needs a solid contact to read voltage correctly. If the error persists, check the handset contacts with a cotton swab; oxidation on the gold pads blocks the handshake. A clean contact at 3.6V nominal is what the base needs to begin charging.

Frequently Asked Questions

My VTech 5838 handset won't pair with the base after I swapped the battery — did I break something?

No. Some DECT cordless phones lose their pairing data when power is fully removed during a battery swap. On the 5838, press and hold the handset's page or find button while it is seated in the base to trigger re-registration. Check your handset label or the base for the exact pairing sequence — it takes under 60 seconds and restores full functionality.

The battery drains completely overnight even though the handset is sitting in the base — what's wrong?

This points to the handset not making a solid electrical connection with the base charging contacts, not a battery fault. Lift the handset out and check that both the handset and base contact pads are clean and free of dust or oxidation. A light wipe with a dry cloth is enough. Reseat the handset — you should hear or feel it click into the cradle — and confirm the charge indicator light activates within a few seconds.

The phone's range feels shorter after the battery swap than it did with the original pack — is the new battery too weak?

Range drops when the handset's RF transmitter pulls more current than the battery can supply without voltage sag. This is a conditioning issue, not a defect. NiMH cells have slightly higher internal resistance in the first few cycles, which causes the voltage to dip under RF load. Run three to five full charge-discharge cycles and the internal resistance drops — transmit power stabilises and range returns to normal.
