Fits ZTE PH500 and PH520 portable radios, replaces OEM part number AB500.
7.4V and 1800mAh delivers full transmit power without voltage sag during sustained RF output on this radio platform.
Gold contact strip connects vertically into the radio's battery slot with a single locking tab at the base.
We bench tested this cell on a PH500 unit — BMS accepted the new pack on first insertion with no dock fault light.
On first charge in a ZTE dock, if the indicator blinks instead of holding steady green, remove the battery and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth before reseating firmly.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

ZTE PH500 / PH520 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (AB500 / AB600)

This 7.4V, 1800mAh Li-ion pack replaces the original battery in the ZTE PH500 and PH520 portable two-way radios. It fits both models and matches OEM part numbers AB500 and AB600. Capacity is 1800mAh (13.32Wh) — identical to the factory specification.

  • PH500 and PH520 platform fit: Both models share the same battery bay geometry, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack covers both radios without any adapter or modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit and receive loads on the bench. The BMS held stable across repeated PTT surges and tripped correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold — no nuisance shutdowns during sustained TX.
  • First insertion into the charger dock: If the dock LED shows a fault on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The ZTE charger requires a clean contact cycle to register the new pack's BMS before charging begins.

Why the PH500 cuts out mid-transmission on a new AB500 pack

A PTT press pulls a sharp current spike — often two to three times the standby draw — to power the RF output stage. If the replacement pack ships at storage voltage (typically around 3.7V per cell), the BMS may interpret that surge as an overcurrent event and trip the protection circuit. The radio goes silent instantly. This is not a faulty pack — it is the BMS doing its job on a cell that has not yet been conditioned. Seat the pack in the charger, let it reach full charge, then retry transmission.

Bar indicator shows one fewer bar than expected after fitting a new pack

The PH500 and PH520 read battery level using voltage thresholds — the radio checks terminal voltage and maps it to a bar count. A new cell fresh from storage sits below the top threshold, so the indicator shows one bar short of full even though the pack is not discharged. This is a voltage reading issue, not a capacity problem. Charge the pack fully until the dock LED goes green, then power the radio on — the bar indicator will read correctly at that point.

Frequently Asked Questions

My PH500 drops to low TX power mid-shift even though the battery was fully charged at the start — what's happening?

Voltage sag under sustained RF output is the cause. When the radio runs extended transmissions back-to-back, cell voltage temporarily dips below the threshold that triggers reduced-power TX mode — even on a healthy pack. If the pack is older, increased internal impedance makes the sag worse. Check terminal voltage with a multimeter immediately after a transmission drop; a reading below 7.0V under load points to cell wear and the pack needs replacing.

The charger dock blinks a fault LED and never starts charging the new AB500 — how do I clear it?

The dock is rejecting the BMS handshake because the contact cycle was incomplete on first insertion. Remove the pack, wipe all gold contacts on both the battery and the dock with a dry cloth to clear any residual film, then reseat the pack with firm, even pressure until it clicks. If the fault LED persists, check that the pack resting voltage is above 6.0V using a multimeter — packs that drop below the dock's acceptance threshold during storage require a trickle pre-charge before the dock will engage.

The radio powers on and receives fine, but PTT causes an instant shutdown — is the pack defective?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a defective cell. The transmit current spike on PTT exceeds what the BMS allows when cells are at or near storage voltage. Fully charge the pack first — do not test PTT straight out of the packaging. If the shutdown continues after a full charge cycle, check whether the radio's TX contacts are oxidised; a high-resistance connection amplifies the apparent current draw and can retrigger the protection circuit even on a good pack.
