This is a 14.8V 4400mAh (65.12Wh) Li-ion battery for the Datron M288 and M296 notebook computers. It replaces the original cell when the laptop no longer holds charge or fails to power on from battery alone. Voltage and connector match the original spec — no modification needed.
- M288 and M296 compatibility: Both models share the same 14.8V battery rail, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One cell fits both. Swapping between models does not require a firmware change or BIOS update.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on a Datron-class notebook platform. The BMS communicated correctly with the host system — charge current ramped normally, taper-off triggered at capacity, and no protection trips occurred during load transitions.
- First-cycle calibration on the M288: After fitting this cell, let the laptop discharge fully until it hibernates on its own, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without unplugging early. This forces the BIOS battery learn cycle to reset against the new cell and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap.
Laptop shuts down at 20–30% remaining after battery swap
This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old, degraded cell. The new cell has a steeper voltage curve at high state-of-charge, so the IC misreads remaining capacity and triggers shutdown early. It is not a fault with the replacement — it is a calibration gap. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate then uninterrupted charge-to-100% cycles and the shutdowns stop. After the second cycle, the fuel gauge IC tracks the new cell accurately and the laptop holds charge to a genuine 0%.
BIOS reports battery health as poor or unknown immediately after install
The BIOS reads health data from EEPROM registers written by the original cell. A new cell arrives with different EEPROM values — cycle count, rated Wh, and internal resistance data all differ from what the BIOS last recorded. This causes the health display to show "poor", "unknown", or a mismatched Wh figure. The fix is to complete one full learn cycle: discharge to hibernate cutoff at roughly 10.5V under load, then charge to 16.72V float without interruption. After that cycle the BIOS rewrites its reference data against the new cell and the health warning clears.

The fuel gauge IC calibrates itself against discharge curves over several cycles. A brand-new cell has different internal resistance and voltage characteristics than the worn cell the IC was trained on, so readings are erratic for the first two to three cycles. Run the laptop on battery until it hibernates on its own, then charge fully to 100% without interrupting — repeat this twice. After the second full cycle the gauge stabilises and tracks accurately.
The replacement cell shows a different Wh rating in Windows Battery Report than the original — 65Wh versus what Windows is displaying. Should I be concerned?
Windows pulls the Wh figure from EEPROM data stored on the cell itself, not from a live measurement. The new cell's EEPROM is written to the rated chemistry spec at manufacture, which may differ slightly from what the previous cell reported after years of degradation updates. The actual usable energy is 65.12Wh as rated. After one full discharge-to-hibernate and uninterrupted charge-to-100% cycle, Windows rewrites its reference and the displayed figure aligns to the new cell's data.
New battery installed but the M288 won't charge above 80% — charger LED goes green and stops.
Some Datron BIOS versions include a charge-limit setting that caps charging at 80% to reduce cell stress during extended mains use. This is a firmware control, not a battery fault. Check the BIOS power management page — look for a "Battery Charge Threshold" or "Maximum Charge" option and set it to 100%. If no such setting exists, check whether any bundled power-management software (common on ruggedised notebooks) has its own charge-limit toggle active.
