Fits Becker Traffic Assist Highspeed II 7988 and replaces OEM battery E4MT081202B22.
3.7V lithium-ion cell rated 1200mAh supplies continuous power to the GPS receiver and display module.
Connector type matches original housing — cell slides into battery slot with positive contact forward and no locking tab.
We bench-tested this cell in a Traffic Assist unit; BMS initialized without fault codes and held stable output under active navigation load.
After installing this cell, power on the GPS outdoors and let it acquire a satellite fix before navigation — cold start takes 5–10 minutes after battery swap versus under a minute on warm restarts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Becker Traffic Assist Highspeed II 7988 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (E4MT081202B22)

This 3.7V, 1200mAh Li-ion cell replaces the original battery in the Becker Traffic Assist Highspeed II 7988 portable GPS navigator. It also fits the BE7988, Traffic Assist Highspeed, and Traffic Assist 7934. Dimensions are 51.00 × 36.53 × 6.57mm — measure your original before fitting if you're unsure.

  • Traffic Assist Highspeed platform compatibility: These models share the same 3.7V single-cell architecture, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol. One cell fits across the range without wiring changes.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a Traffic Assist unit. The BMS handshake completed correctly, charge termination triggered at the expected 4.2V cutoff, and the protection circuit tripped cleanly on over-discharge.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after fitting: After any full power interruption, the GPS receiver loses its ephemeris data and must perform a cold start. Take the unit outdoors immediately after powering on and let it acquire a satellite fix before driving — first fix can take 5–10 minutes, but subsequent warm starts are under a minute.

GPS accuracy dropping at low battery on the Traffic Assist 7988

When cell voltage drops below roughly 3.5V, some Becker Traffic Assist units reduce receiver sensitivity to protect remaining charge. This shows up as position drift or slower route recalculation — not a software glitch. The GPS chip gets less power, so weaker satellite signals get dropped. Keeping the cell above 3.6V during navigation maintains full receiver performance.

Device shuts off mid-navigation without any low-battery warning

The battery indicator on these units is calibrated to the original cell's discharge curve. A new or partially degraded cell can hit the hard voltage cutoff before the on-screen warning triggers — especially during active GPS and display load. The BMS cuts output at the protection threshold regardless of what the indicator shows. Charge the unit fully to 4.2V, then run one complete navigation session to let the firmware re-learn the discharge curve.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Becker Traffic Assist 7988 lost all my saved routes when I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The Traffic Assist 7988 stores some route and POI data in battery-backed RAM. When the cell is removed, that volatile memory loses power and the data clears. Saved destinations stored in flash memory survive the swap, but active routes and recent history typically don't. Export any important routes via the PC software before pulling the old cell.

After fitting the new battery, the GPS is taking forever to find satellites — what's wrong?

Nothing is wrong. Removing the battery causes a full cold start — the receiver loses the ephemeris data it normally caches to speed up satellite acquisition. Cold start on the Traffic Assist platform typically takes 5–10 minutes for a first fix outdoors. Drive to an open area with a clear sky view, leave the unit on, and the receiver will rebuild its satellite data. Subsequent power cycles will lock in under a minute.

The 7988 is draining the new battery much faster during active navigation than when I just leave it idle — is the cell faulty?

It's not faulty. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver, map rendering, and display simultaneously — that load draws significantly more current than standby. The display backlight alone accounts for a large share of that draw. Drop screen brightness to 50% or below during daytime driving and the discharge rate falls noticeably. If drain is still unusually fast, check that the unit isn't also connected to a 3G traffic data accessory, which adds a continuous radio draw.
