Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Garmin EDGE Explore 2 / Dezl OTR700 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (361-00056-12)
This is a 3.7V 750mAh Li-ion cell that replaces the original battery in the Garmin EDGE Explore 2 GPS cycling computer and the Dezl OTR700 GPS navigator. Both devices use the same OEM part number 361-00056-12. Dimensions are 48.00 × 34.00 × 4.50mm — verify these against your original cell before fitting.
- EDGE Explore 2 and Dezl OTR700 compatibility: Both devices draw from the same 3.7V single-cell architecture and use an identical connector footprint and protection circuit pinout — that is why one cell covers both models without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran the cell through charge and discharge cycles on the EDGE Explore 2 platform. The BMS accepted a standard CC/CV charge profile without fault flags, and the protection circuit tripped correctly at the low-voltage threshold before cell damage could occur.
- Cold-start GPS initialisation after fitting: After installing this cell, power the device on outdoors with clear sky view and let it run until satellite lock is confirmed. A full power interruption clears the GPS receiver's ephemeris data, so the first fix after a battery swap can take 5–10 minutes — subsequent fixes will be under a minute once the almanac is rebuilt.
Why the EDGE Explore 2 shuts off without a low-battery warning
The on-screen battery indicator on the EDGE Explore 2 is calibrated against the original cell's discharge curve. When a new cell is fitted, the device's fuel gauge hasn't yet mapped its capacity — the indicator reads inaccurately for the first few full charge and discharge cycles. The device can hit its internal voltage cutoff threshold at 3.0V per cell before the visual indicator reaches the empty mark, causing a sudden shutdown. Run two or three complete charge-to-discharge cycles to let the gauge recalibrate.
Saved routes missing from EDGE Explore 2 after battery swap
The EDGE Explore 2 stores routes and course data in flash memory, which is non-volatile and does not depend on battery power to retain data. However, if the device was not shut down cleanly before the battery was removed, any unsaved activity or in-progress route state held in RAM will be lost. Saved courses pre-loaded via Garmin Connect or BaseCamp are unaffected. To recover, reconnect to Garmin Connect and re-sync — your course library will repopulate from the cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions
My EDGE Explore 2 is taking ages to find satellites after I swapped the battery — is something wrong with the new cell?
Nothing is wrong with the cell. Removing the battery clears the GPS receiver's ephemeris and almanac data, forcing a cold start. The receiver has to download fresh satellite positioning data from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes with a clear sky view. Head outside away from buildings, leave the device powered on, and lock time will drop back under a minute on subsequent power-ons once the almanac is rebuilt.
The EDGE Explore 2 battery drains noticeably faster when I'm actively navigating compared to when the device is just sitting idle — is the new cell faulty?
The cell is behaving normally. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver continuously at full sensitivity, keeps the backlit display on, and processes turn-by-turn calculations — all simultaneously. Standby or sleep mode drops the receiver to a low-power polling state and dims or blanks the display. If drain during navigation feels excessive, reduce display brightness to 50% or lower and disable Bluetooth if it's not needed — these two changes have the largest measurable impact on discharge rate during a ride.
The EDGE Explore 2 shows reduced GPS accuracy and the track looks jumpy at low battery — does battery level actually affect GPS signal?
Yes, it can. Some Garmin GPS units reduce receiver sensitivity and sampling rate when battery voltage falls below a set threshold — typically around 3.4–3.5V — to extend remaining power. At reduced sensitivity, the receiver relies on fewer satellites and multipath errors become more visible in the track log. Keeping the battery above 20% charge during rides avoids this threshold. If accuracy issues appear early in a ride on a freshly charged cell, perform two full charge-discharge cycles to let the fuel gauge recalibrate before drawing conclusions.
