Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin GPSMAP 276 / 296 / 396 Series — 8.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (010-10517-00)

This 8.4V, 3400mAh Li-ion cell replaces the original battery in the Garmin GPSMAP 276, GPSMAP 276c, GPSMAP 296, GPSMAP 396, and related models. These are portable marine and aviation GPS navigators used for waypoint tracking, route planning, and active navigation. Swap this in when the original cell no longer holds a usable charge.

  • GPSMAP 276 / 276c / 296 / 396 platform fit: These models share the same battery bay dimensions, 8.4V two-cell Li-ion voltage rail, and BMS communication protocol — one cell covers the full group. The OEM part numbers 010-10517-00, 011-00955-00, and 010-10517-01 all map to this same physical format.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the GPSMAP platform. The BMS balanced correctly, the protection circuit tripped at the expected low-voltage floor, and the unit reported battery level accurately across the discharge curve.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after swap: After fitting this cell, power the unit outdoors with a clear sky view and leave it running. The GPS performs a cold start after any full power interruption — first satellite fix typically takes 5 to 10 minutes. Subsequent warm starts drop that well under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the GPSMAP 276 series

When cell voltage drops below roughly 7.0V under load, the GPSMAP 276 series reduces power to the GPS receiver to extend operating time. That reduction in receiver sensitivity lowers the signal-to-noise ratio on weaker satellite signals. In practice, position accuracy degrades and track logs show more scatter. Keeping the battery above the halfway charge mark during active navigation prevents the unit from entering this low-power receive mode.

GPSMAP shuts off without warning before the battery indicator hits empty

This happens when a degraded original cell can no longer hold voltage under the load spike of the GPS receiver and backlit display running together. The battery indicator reads a resting voltage that looks acceptable, but under draw the cell sags past the BMS cutoff threshold instantly. A fresh cell with full capacity eliminates this — the sag under load stays within the operating window. After fitting the replacement, do one full charge to 8.4V before extended use to let the fuel gauge recalibrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

My GPSMAP 276 lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The GPSMAP 276 stores routes and waypoints in battery-backed RAM, and a full power removal — such as a battery swap — can wipe that memory if the capacitor that bridges the gap drains before you get the new cell seated. It is not a fault with the replacement battery. Going forward, export your routes to a PC via Garmin's software before any battery change, then reload them after the swap.

Satellite lock is taking 8 minutes after I put in this replacement — did I get a bad battery?

The battery has nothing to do with lock time. After any full power interruption, the GPSMAP 276 loses its cached almanac and ephemeris data and has to perform a cold start — that takes 5 to 10 minutes with a clear sky view. Once the unit has run through one full acquisition cycle, subsequent warm starts drop to under a minute. Leave the GPS outdoors in open sky after the first power-on and let it complete that initial fix.

My GPSMAP 296 drains noticeably faster when I'm actively navigating versus just leaving it on — why?

Active navigation runs the GPS receiver at full sensitivity and keeps the display on, which together draw significantly more current than standby mode. This is normal behaviour, not a cell defect. Reducing backlight brightness is the single most effective way to reduce draw during active use — the display is the largest variable load on this platform. If drain still seems excessive with brightness lowered, check that the track log is not set to record at maximum frequency, which also increases receiver duty cycle.
