Fits Garmin Nuvi 40, Nuvi 40LM, Nuvi 52, Nuvi 52LM and replaces OEM part 361-00056-05.
3.7V, 750mAh Li-ion cell delivers enough capacity to restore full navigation sessions on your GPS unit.
Connector seats straight into the battery slot with a single locking tab — orientation matters, push until it clicks.
We ran this cell through full discharge cycles on the Nuvi platform — BMS delivered steady voltage curve with no early cutoff.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation — cold start after battery swap takes 5–10 minutes for first fix versus under a minute for warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin Nuvi 40 / Nuvi 52 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (361-00056-05)

This 3.7V, 750mAh Li-ion cell replaces the original battery in the Garmin Nuvi 40, Nuvi 40LM, Nuvi 52, and Nuvi 52LM portable GPS navigators. It shares the same OEM part numbers 361-00056-05 and 361-00056-11 across the Nuvi 40 and 52 families. Fit this cell when the original no longer holds a charge or shuts off during active navigation.

  • Nuvi 40 and 52 family fitment: The Nuvi 40, 40LM, 52, and 52LM share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and 3.7V power rail. One cell covers the full lineup. No adapter or wiring change needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the Nuvi 40 platform. The BMS reported correct voltage at each state-of-charge threshold, and the device accepted the cell without any low-battery alert on first power-up.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after fitting: After any full power interruption — including a battery swap — the GPS performs a cold start. Power the unit on outdoors in open sky and leave it running. First satellite fix takes 5–10 minutes. Subsequent warm starts run under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the Nuvi 40

Some Nuvi units reduce GPS receiver sensitivity as voltage drops toward the low-battery cutoff. This saves power but lowers the number of satellites the receiver tracks. You may notice position drift or wider accuracy circles on the map before the device shows a low-battery warning. A fresh cell running at a full 3.7V nominal restores the receiver to its normal sensitivity window.

Nuvi 40 shutting off without a low-battery warning

The battery indicator on the Nuvi 40 reads relative to a calibrated voltage curve stored in firmware. An aged or deeply discharged cell has a steeper voltage drop under load, so the device hits its hard cutoff voltage before the on-screen indicator reaches one bar. The fix is a full charge to 4.2V followed by one complete discharge cycle on the new cell — this lets the firmware re-anchor its voltage-to-percentage mapping. If the unit still cuts off early after one cycle, run a second full charge-discharge pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Garmin Nuvi 40 lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The Nuvi 40 holds some route and trip data in battery-backed RAM, which loses its state the moment power is fully removed. Saved favourites stored to internal flash are usually retained, but active routes and recent destinations in volatile memory are wiped. After fitting the new cell, re-enter any routes you need before your next trip. Going forward, use the "My Favourites" save function so destinations write to flash rather than RAM.

Satellite lock is taking over five minutes every time I start navigation — did the battery swap cause this?

The battery swap itself caused a cold start — a full power removal clears the GPS receiver's cached almanac and ephemeris data. Without that cache, the receiver has to download fresh satellite timing data from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes in open sky. This is a one-time delay. Leave the unit powered on outdoors after first fitting the new cell, let it complete the full lock, and subsequent starts will return to under a minute as the almanac rebuilds.

My Nuvi 40 drains the battery much faster when I'm actually navigating than when it's just sitting idle — what's happening?

Active navigation runs two high-draw components simultaneously — the GPS receiver is continuously calculating position and the display stays on at whatever brightness you have set. Standby draws almost nothing by comparison. To extend charge between top-ups, lower screen brightness to the minimum usable level in Settings > Display. Also check that the screen timeout is not set to "Never" — letting the display sleep when you glance away from the unit makes a measurable difference in draw.
