This is a 4.8V, 1500mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for Ovaled LED light devices including the 290152, 290153, 290170, and 290171 models. It restores power to rechargeable LED lighting fixtures that have lost capacity or stopped holding a charge. Voltage and cell chemistry match the original specification exactly.
- 290152–290171 series compatibility: These Ovaled models share the same 4.8V four-cell Ni-MH configuration and connector arrangement. The LED driver circuit in each unit draws from the same voltage rail, so one cell pack covers the full range without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a calibrated load. The BMS held the 4.8V nominal line cleanly across the discharge curve, with cutoff triggering before cell voltage dropped into reversal territory.
- First-cycle brightness calibration: Run the light on medium brightness for the first full cycle. This gives the LED driver time to calibrate current output against the new cell before you push it to maximum draw — full brightness on an unconditioned pack can cause the driver to read a false low-voltage condition.
LED work light dimming before the low-battery indicator triggers
This is a normal function of the LED driver, not a fault in the battery. At moderate discharge depth, the driver begins reducing current to the LEDs before the BMS reaches its hard cutoff threshold — typically around 4.0V on a 4.8V Ni-MH pack. The dimming acts as a soft warning ahead of the hard shutoff. If dimming happens much earlier than expected, the pack likely needs a full conditioning cycle to reach rated capacity.
Light not reaching full brightness after fitting a new battery
A new Ni-MH pack fresh from storage often sits below the minimum input voltage the LED driver needs for full-brightness operation. The driver throttles output until it sees sufficient voltage headroom above the 4.8V nominal line. Fit the battery, charge the unit completely before first use, then run a full discharge cycle. After one full charge-discharge cycle, full brightness should restore at a measured pack voltage of 5.4–5.6V at full charge.

Why does my Ovaled light feel warm around the battery compartment during extended use?
Heat in the housing during long runs is normal — it comes from two sources stacked together: LED junction heat conducted back through the housing and the Ni-MH cells warming as they discharge under sustained load. Ni-MH chemistry runs warmer than lithium during high-current draw, and the enclosed housing traps that heat. If the housing gets too hot to hold comfortably, reduce brightness or let the unit cool for a few minutes before continuing.
My Ovaled light cuts out completely at maximum brightness shortly after a full charge — what's happening?
Maximum brightness draws significantly more current than medium or low settings — typically three to four times the draw of 50% brightness on LED driver circuits like this. A new or recently replaced Ni-MH pack may not yet be delivering full rated capacity, causing the pack voltage to sag quickly under peak load, which trips the BMS cutoff early. Run two or three full charge-discharge cycles on medium brightness first. After conditioning, the pack should sustain maximum brightness without premature cutoff.
The battery charges but the Ovaled light won't stay on — it flickers and shuts off almost immediately.
This usually means the cell voltage is collapsing under even light load, which points to a cell imbalance or deep discharge damage in the old pack rather than a charger fault. If you've just fitted this replacement and see the same behaviour, check that the connector is seated fully — a partial connection raises contact resistance enough to cause voltage drop the BMS reads as a dead pack. Reseat the connector firmly and place the unit back on charge for a complete cycle before retesting.
