Fits Rand McNally TND-550 and TND-540 GPS navigators; replaces OEM part TOP 523450.
Voltage and capacity are 3.7V and 1000mAh—this lithium-polymer cell delivers the same power envelope as the original, restoring full navigation uptime on the road.
Connector is a proprietary Rand McNally two-pin JST-style socket with a mechanical locking tab; polarity marked on the battery case matches the device receptacle.
We bench-tested this cell in a TND-550 at full charge—GPS receiver drew steady current through satellite acquisition with no BMS cutoff or voltage sag during active navigation mode.
After inserting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before use—GPS performs a cold start after power interruption that takes several minutes for first fix.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Rand McNally TND-550 / TND-540 — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (TOP 523450)

This 3.7V 1000mAh lithium-polymer cell replaces the original TOP 523450 battery in the Rand McNally TND-550 and TND-540 trucking GPS navigators. It restores off-vehicle operation when the factory cell no longer holds a charge. Capacity is 1000mAh (3.7Wh) — matched to the original specification.

  • TND-550 and TND-540 compatibility: Both models share the same battery bay geometry, connector pinout, and 3.7V supply rail. The TOP 523450 part number covers both, so one cell fits either unit without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the TND platform. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, and the charge circuit terminated correctly at full voltage. No swelling or thermal anomaly was observed during the test run.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after swap: After fitting this battery, power the unit on outdoors before driving. The TND-550 performs a GPS cold start following a full power interruption — first satellite fix can take 5–10 minutes. Subsequent warm starts drop that to under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the TND-550

As the Li-Polymer cell drops toward its lower voltage threshold, some TND units reduce GPS receiver sensitivity to conserve power. This shows up as position drift or a delayed position update on the map, even on open roads with clear sky view. The fix is not a settings change — it is voltage. Keeping the cell above 3.6V under load maintains full receiver operation. Charge the unit or connect to vehicle power before the battery indicator reaches its last bar.

TND-550 shutting off without a low-battery warning

After an aged battery is replaced, the fuel gauge IC on the TND-550 is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. The device's low-battery threshold can trigger later than expected — or not at all — causing an abrupt shutdown mid-route. This is not a fault with the new cell. Run two or three full charge-to-discharge cycles to allow the gauge to recalibrate. After the third cycle, the warning LED and on-screen indicator should align with the actual remaining voltage, which reads approximately 3.5V at the cutoff point.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TND-550 shut off mid-route with no low battery warning — is the new battery faulty?

The battery is not faulty. The TND-550's fuel gauge IC retains the discharge curve of the old degraded cell, so its low-battery threshold no longer lines up with the new cell's actual voltage. This causes the device to cut power abruptly at what appears to be a normal charge level. Run three full charge-to-discharge cycles and the gauge will recalibrate — after that the warning triggers correctly at around 3.5V.

My saved truck routes and POIs disappeared after replacing the battery — can I get them back?

Some route and POI data on the TND-550 is held in battery-backed RAM. A full power removal — which happens during a battery swap — clears that volatile memory. Data stored to internal flash or an SD card survives the swap, but session routes and unsaved favourites do not. Before any battery replacement, export saved routes through the TND's sync utility to a PC or SD card so you can restore them after reassembly.

Active navigation is draining the new battery much faster than standby — is something wrong?

Nothing is wrong — this is normal for the TND-550. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver continuously, renders the map at full frame rate, and keeps the display on, often at maximum brightness. Standby draws a fraction of that load. To extend off-vehicle use during active navigation, reduce display brightness to 50% or below in the settings menu — that alone cuts display draw significantly and keeps the cell above the 3.6V threshold where receiver performance stays consistent.
