Fits Garmin GP55BT GPS navigators; replaces OEM battery GP55BT for handheld positioning devices.
3.7V lithium-ion cell at 800mAh delivers continuous power for satellite acquisition and route storage on portable GPS units.
Connector seats into the GP55BT battery slot with positive terminal forward; locking tab clips down flush against the housing.
Bench testing showed the BMS engaged within 30 seconds of insertion; voltage stabilized at 4.2V after charger connection with no fault codes.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation use — GPS performs a cold start after power interruption that takes 5–10 minutes for first fix versus under a minute for subsequent warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

TAKARA GP55BT — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This is a 3.7V, 800mAh (2.96Wh) lithium-ion cell for the TAKARA GP55BT portable GPS navigator. It slots directly into the GP55BT battery bay and restores power to a unit that no longer holds a charge. Voltage and dimensions match the original: 47.90 × 44.10 × 5.55mm.

  • GP55BT fit notes: The GP55BT uses a flat Li-ion cell at 3.7V with a compact form factor. The BMS on this replacement handles over-discharge cutoff and charge termination the same way the factory cell does — no firmware complaints or charge refusals during testing.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the GP55BT platform. The BMS terminated charge cleanly at 4.2V and held cutoff voltage above 3.0V under load — no premature shutdowns observed during the run.
  • First fix after swap: After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and let it acquire a satellite fix before use. The GP55BT performs a cold start after any full power interruption — first fix takes 5–10 minutes; subsequent warm starts drop to under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the GP55BT

Some GPS units, including compact navigators in this class, step down receiver sensitivity when battery voltage drops toward the cutoff threshold. On the GP55BT, this can show up as position drift or slower fix updates before the low-battery indicator even appears. The receiver draws significant current — signal processing is one of the first things firmware throttles to extend run time. Keeping the cell above 3.6V under load avoids this behaviour.

GP55BT shuts off without warning — no low-battery alert first

This happens when the battery indicator is uncalibrated against the new cell's discharge curve. The GP55BT reads voltage to estimate remaining capacity, and an aged or replaced cell discharges differently than the curve the firmware expects. The unit hits its hardware cutoff voltage — typically around 3.0V — before the software low-battery alert triggers. Run two or three full charge-discharge cycles to let the firmware recalibrate its voltage-to-capacity estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

My GP55BT saved routes and favourites disappeared after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The GP55BT stores some user data in RAM that requires continuous battery power to retain. When the cell is fully removed, that RAM loses power and the data is wiped. Points of interest and saved routes stored only in RAM — not written to internal flash — will not survive a full power interruption. Before swapping the battery, export or note any routes you need to keep; after fitting the new cell, re-enter them or sync from a connected PC.

Satellite lock is taking 5–10 minutes after fitting the new battery — was it faster before?

That delay is a cold start, not a fault with the replacement cell. When the GP55BT loses all power, it discards its cached almanac and ephemeris data — the satellite position tables it uses to lock quickly. Without that cache, it has to download fresh data from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes outdoors with a clear sky view. Subsequent power cycles will lock in under a minute once the almanac is rebuilt and stored.

Active navigation is draining the GP55BT battery much faster than standby — what's happening?

Active navigation runs the GPS receiver and display simultaneously at full draw. The receiver alone pulls significant current during continuous position updates, and if screen brightness is at maximum, total draw increases further. In standby, the receiver duty-cycles or sleeps between fixes. Lower screen brightness to its minimum usable level during navigation — that single change has the largest impact on current draw for this class of device.
