Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

TomTom Urban Rider / Urban Rider Pro — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (MALAGA)

This is a 3.7V, 3000mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the TomTom Urban Rider, Urban Rider Pro, Rider 2nd Edition, and 4GC01 GPS navigators. It matches the original cell's voltage, capacity, and physical dimensions (68.50 × 18.50 × 18.50mm). Fit the battery and the device powers on without any configuration changes required.

  • Urban Rider and Rider Pro compatibility: These models share the same battery bay dimensions and 3.7V single-cell architecture. The connector and BMS communication protocol are identical across the Urban Rider, Urban Rider Pro, and Rider 2nd Edition, so one cell covers all variants listed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on TomTom Urban Rider hardware. The BMS accepted the cell without fault codes, balanced charge terminated cleanly at 4.2V, and the protection circuit tripped correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • First fix after swap: After fitting this cell, power the device on outdoors and let it acquire a satellite fix before starting a route. The GPS performs a cold start after any full power interruption — first fix can take 5–10 minutes. Subsequent warm starts run under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the Urban Rider

When cell voltage drops below roughly 3.5V, some TomTom Urban Rider units throttle GPS receiver sensitivity to reduce current draw. The result is a wider position error — the blue dot drifts or snaps to parallel streets. This is firmware-level power management, not a fault in the GPS hardware itself. Fitting a fresh cell at full charge restores the receiver to full sensitivity immediately.

Urban Rider shuts off without warning before the battery indicator hits empty

The battery percentage indicator on the Urban Rider is calibrated against the original cell's discharge curve. A worn or new-to-the-device cell may have a slightly different curve, so the displayed percentage doesn't match actual remaining capacity. The device hits the hardware low-voltage cutoff before the visual indicator reaches zero. Run two or three full charge and discharge cycles to let the device recalibrate its fuel gauge — the indicator accuracy improves noticeably after the second cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TomTom Urban Rider lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The Urban Rider stores some route and POI data in RAM backed by the battery. When the cell is fully removed, that memory loses power and the data clears. Map data stored on internal flash survives the swap, but unsaved routes and recent destinations held in volatile memory do not. Before replacing the battery, export or note any routes you want to keep using the TomTom MyDrive web interface.

Satellite lock is taking 5–10 minutes after fitting the new battery — is something wrong with it?

Nothing is wrong. After a full power interruption, the Urban Rider loses its cached almanac and ephemeris data and has to perform a cold start. Cold starts take 5–10 minutes outdoors with a clear sky view. Once the device has reacquired satellite data and stored it, warm starts drop to under a minute. Take the unit outside, leave it stationary, and let it complete that first fix before mounting it.

The Urban Rider drains the new battery much faster when I'm actively navigating than when it's just sitting idle — is the battery faulty?

It is not faulty — this is normal for any GPS navigator. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver at full sensitivity and keeps the display lit, which draws significantly more current than standby. Reduce screen brightness to its lowest usable level and disable Bluetooth if it is not in use; these two changes reduce draw noticeably. If drain still seems excessive, check whether the device is set to recalculate routes continuously — frequent rerouting keeps the processor and receiver active without pause.
