Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Optelec Compact+ — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (EP-1)
This is a 2.4V, 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Optelec Compact+ electronic magnifier. It fits both the Compact+ and Compact Plus variants. The cell matches the original EP-1 specification and is a direct swap for users whose existing battery no longer holds a useful charge.
- Compact+ and Compact Plus compatibility: Both device names refer to the same hardware platform. The battery connector, BMS voltage rail, and cell footprint are identical across both — the naming difference is regional, not technical.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the Compact+'s onboard charging circuit and confirmed BMS handshake, correct termination voltage, and stable output under backlight load at full brightness.
- First-cycle brightness setting: Run the device at 50% screen brightness during the first full charge cycle. Maximum brightness on the first cycle after a cell swap draws extra current that can confuse the battery indicator — the percentage reading stabilises after one full charge-discharge cycle at moderate brightness.
Image colour shifting before the battery indicator shows low
The Compact+'s display driver is voltage-sensitive. As the cell approaches the lower end of its discharge curve, the backlight driver receives less voltage before the battery gauge registers a low reading. This causes colour temperature and contrast to shift visibly — whites appear warmer, text contrast drops — while the battery indicator still shows remaining charge. It is not a display fault. The cell is nearing cutoff voltage even though the gauge has not caught up.
Screen flickering immediately after fitting a new cell
Flickering on a fresh cell usually means the battery contact points on the device are not making full connection. Remove the battery, clean the gold contacts on both the battery and the bay with a dry cotton swab, and reseat the cell firmly. If the flicker persists only at maximum brightness, the cell voltage is temporarily sagging under peak backlight draw — drop brightness one step and cycle the device off and on. A stable cell at 2.4V nominal should hold the backlight steady at all brightness levels once contacts are clean.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Compact+ screen keeps flickering even though I just put a new battery in — what's wrong?
The most common cause is dirty or misaligned contact points between the battery and the device bay. Remove the cell, wipe the gold contacts on both the battery and the bay with a dry cotton swab, and reseat it firmly. If flickering only happens at maximum brightness, the cell is momentarily sagging under the backlight current draw — reduce brightness by one level and power cycle the device. A properly seated cell at 2.4V nominal holds the backlight stable across all brightness settings.
The colours on my Compact+ are washing out and contrast is dropping but the battery icon isn't showing low — is the screen damaged?
The screen is not damaged. The Compact+'s display driver is sensitive to small drops in supply voltage. As the Ni-MH cell approaches its discharge floor, the backlight circuit loses drive voltage before the battery gauge registers a low state — so colour shift and contrast loss arrive first. This is a normal characteristic of the voltage-sensitive display driver, not a hardware fault. When you see the colour shift, treat it as the true low-battery signal and place the device on charge.
My Compact+ isn't charging — the indicator doesn't change at all after I plug it in. Could the new battery be faulty?
The USB charging circuit on the Compact+ requires a minimum input voltage to initialise — if you are using a third-party USB adapter or a low-output port, the circuit may not activate at all. Use the original Optelec charger or a wall adapter rated at 5V/1A or higher. If the indicator still does not respond, confirm the charging port is free of debris. Connect, wait 60 seconds, and check for any LED response — a completely flat Ni-MH cell can take up to 90 seconds before the charging circuit shows activity.
